Shell Centenary Scholarships and Shell Centenary Chevening Scholarships

The Shell Centenary and Centenary Chevening Scholarships offers postgraduate students from developing countries the opportunity to study in the UK and gain skills that will make a long-term contribution to the further development of their countries by becoming leaders, decision-makers or opinion-formers. The scholarships cover tuition fees, accommodation, maintenance costs and a return airfare for the scholarship holder.

Six of these scholarships (two Shell Centenary Scholarships and four Shell Centenary Chevening Scholarships) are available each year at the University of Edinburgh for students pursuing one of the following taught Master's degrees:

  • MSc High Performance Computing
  • MSc Informatics
  • MSc Operational Research
  • MSc Quantitative Genetics & Genome Analysis
  • MSc Remote Sensing and Image Processing Technology

  • MSc Signal Processing & Communications
  • MSc Sustainable Energy Systems

Eligibility

The scholarships are open to students who are nationals of and residents of any country other than: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom and United States.

A typical successful Chevening applicant would be:

  • Committed to return to their country and contribute to the socio-economic development of their country through implementing the new skills and knowledge acquired in the UK
  • Established in a career, with a track record of excellence and achievement, and the prospect of becoming a leader in his/her chosen field. The vast majority of Chevening scholars are aged 25 - 35 years old
  • Be able to show at interview that they possess the personal qualities to benefit from their scholarship and use it to succeed in their chosen career
  • Have a clear idea of how their scholarship will benefit their country on their return
  • A graduate with outstanding academic ability who has obtained the equivalent of a UK first-class Honours degree
  • Have good English Language skills with scholarship applicants requiring a minimum IELTS of 7.5

Preference will be given to candidates who have not already had the opportunity to study in the UK.

Due to the tremendous competition for these awards, you are encouraged to only apply for a Shell Scholarship if you satisfy the above criteria.


Application Procedure

Candidates should:

  • Request an information pack containing a University Postgraduate application form for admission to one of the eligible programmes of study from the School or College in which they intend to study
  • Complete the University of Edinburgh application form and return it to the relevant College Postgraduate Office, making a clear statement that you wish to be considered for a Shell Scholarship. If it appears from your application form that you are eligible for a Shell award you will then be sent a Shell application form. Shell application forms can only be obtained through participating Schools or the Colleges of Science & Engineering and Medicine & Veterinary Medicine, Postgraduate Offices
  • Complete the Shell Scholarship application form and return the original form plus 4 copies to the address set out below no later than 1 March 2007. Applicants should have submitted all supporting documentation including your Degree transcript, English language test results, and references well in advance of the scholarship deadline in order to be considered for the scholarship.

Please note that documents submitted with the application cannot be returned. You should therefore ensure that you keep copies for your own use.
