Postdoc mathematical analysis and scientific computing in wave equations

The faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science from the University of Twente educates, and conducts research with approximately 2000 students including 300 PhD-students. The faculty is also responsible for a large volume of service education for programmes of other faculties. The faculty has approximately 300 permanent staff.

The faculty of EEMCS conducts BSc-programmes in Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science and Business Information Systems and MSc-programmes in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Applied Mathematics, Business Information Technology, Computer Science, Telematics, Human Media Interaction en Embedded Systems and is partner in various programmes of other faculties.

Postdoc mathematical analysis and scientific computing in wave equations

Within the chair Applied Analysis and Mathematical Physics of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science, there is vacancy for a postdoc. He or she will be part of the project “Wave propagation and reflection seismology” of Dr. C.C. Stolk, which is funded by NWO via a VIDI subsidy. The postdoc is to work on innovative methods for the wave equation, using ideas from analysis to develop fast numerical schemes. Seismic applications can be part of this work.

Research topic

Reflection seismology is a technique used in industry and in academia to study the properties of the inside of the earth using acoustic waves that are generated and observed at the surface. The most important application is in the exploration for oil and gas, but it is also used to study fundamental geophysical questions about the Earth, and in engineering applications. The problem of converting the measured data into reliable images of the Earth leads to much interesting mathematics. For example regarding seismic imaging and migration, inverse problems and computational methods for wave equations. This last aspect is important since the problem is usually computationally very intensive and computation of solutions to the wave equation in practice takes up most computational time. Not only is this an interesting problem for applying mathematical ideas by mathematicians, but also mathematicians can learn from the methods that geophysicists have come up with over time. Often this involves a combination of ideas about physical wave propagation and reflection, analysis and geometry and computational aspects.

We propose the postdoc to work on recent, new techniques for wave equations. Some references are given below. Different techniques are used to obtain an improvement in speed or accuracy. For example special basis functions, or special ways to approximate operators, using careful decompositions and near-sparsity. Or explicit propagation by translating over the rays of geometrical optics (so far only in 1-D). This is based on high-frequency, ray theory. In these ways the expensive small time step requirement (CFL condition) for finite difference or finite element schemes can be circumvented. Such approaches combine analytical and numerical ideas, and require further research.

These are Applied Analysis and Mathematical Physics (AAMP, www.math.utwente.nl/aamp), and Numerical Analysis and Computation Mechanics (NACM, www.math.utwente.nl/nacm). Together these groups consist of about 15 permanent staff and approximately the same number of PhD students and postdocs.

Candidates

The Postdoc should have excellent academic achievements in mathematics or applied mathematics. He or she has a strong background in mathematical analysis and/or numerical analysis, and a good knowledge of PDEs. Some experience with programming numerical codes will be beneficial.

Foreign students university, fine arts and music school scholarships

Through the Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS), the Swiss Government grants foreign students university scholarships (Swiss universities, Federal Institutes of Technology). These scholarships are offered on the basis of reciprocity (fixed number of scholarships for each country) or within the frame of a scholarship pool (scholarships without fixed distribution by country). They are intended for students who have graduated from university (postgraduates) and who, by staying in Switzerland, will be able to further their education and to undertake research work in the fields in which the Swiss universities are particularly active.

To a limited extent, scholarships are also offered for postgraduate studies at the Universities of Applied Sciences. This applies to the group of Western (AP-1) and Central and Eastern European countries (AP-2) included in the scholarship pool. Students must have graduated from a university or university of applied sciences with at least a Bachelor Degree and enrol in Switzerland for studies at post-graduate level. This offer applies for the seven universities of applied sciences, not including teaching colleges. In the field of the arts (design/music), the conditions for arts students relating to the country offer apply (see below).

This program is valid only for studies in Switzerland. It is not valid for on-the-job studies, part-time studies or correspondence courses.

In the framework of a special allocation, scholarships for advanced arts students (without fixed distribution by country) are offered to the best applicants who are already at an advanced stage of their training. This offer is restricted to those countries which are listed under AR, AP-1 and BR-1 as well as to China and Russia.

The scholarships are offered in principle to foreign governments. The applications have to be submitted for a preliminary selection to the national institution in charge and the Swiss diplomatic representation in the student's country of origin. The Swiss diplomatic representation will thereupon forward the pre-selected applications to the FCS for definitive selection. Finally the Federal Department of Home Affairs awards scholarships on the advice of the FCS.

As part of a special allocation, the Swiss Government provides a number of additional scholarships to postgraduates from Central and Eastern European countries (pool system, no fixed number of scholarships for each country). The conditions are described in a special notice.

Earning your degree online or via distance learning with AIU

It is common knowledge that a college degree will improve your marketability and earning potential. So why do many students fail to finish college or stop at the bachelors level? The answer is: time, distance, money. The distance learning programs at AIU address these obstacles directly with self paced, online and affordable degree programs for adult students. A university degree can boost earning power by up to $2.3 million over a lifetime. Qualified people are passed over for job opportunities and promotions, simply because they don't have a college degree. Don't put your future on hold any longer; invest in your future today!

Earning your degree online or via distance learning with AIU is extremely enticing:

* Work on assignments when convenient for you
* Study at home or office
* Access learning resources online any time you need them
* Determine the courses that are most relevant to you
* Earn credit for work experience gained through life long learning

But earning a degree via distance learning is not right for everyone. There is the mistaken belief or myth that online distance learning programs are easier than traditional courses. The hard reality is that the dropout rate for higher education online programs is typically 20 percent higher than it is for traditionally delivered programs.

Some of the challenges online distance learning students face revolves around discipline, organization and independence. In a traditional setting you would meet with a professor or attend a classroom, this forces you to get you work and readings done. Since AIU programs are self paced, students need to have the discipline to push them-selves and impose deadlines to guarantee progress is made on their assignments. AIU students enjoy a greater freedom in the content of their assignments which in turn requires a greater degree of organization. Due to the nature of distance learning students will need to be comfortable reading material on their own and working on exercises independently.

To assist students and increase graduation rate AIU provides each student with access to their Online Student Section. The Online Student Section allows students to:

* Access Instructions and formats for orientation courses,
* Keep a calendar of assignments with planned completion dates,
* Upload/Post assignments,
* Review Grades/Transcripts,
* Post Questions or Messages with Student Services and/or your advisor,
* Start the first phase of the program to establish the program curriculum,
* Access the AIU Online Library

Research can be conducted at the AIU online library which has full text access to 1600 journals and periodicals amounting to over 10 million full text sources. This is a quick and convenient way to begin your research in any topic or area from your curriculum. Your program is primarily through independent study and research. Just like in a traditional classroom, your course text book (or other reference materials) will be your main resource. Your assessor will review the work or assignments done from the book or applied from the book to a practical exercise or project (this may be appropriate for you if your work relates to your field of study). Your grade is derived form the assessment of your assignment and an exam which will be administered orally via phone or sent to you via e-mail. There are no real deadlines or semesters to go by, you work at your own pace. Your only requirement is to set a study schedule and keep it up to date. Should there be delays or set backs just resubmit with revised schedule. The curriculum you take will be modified from the standard program to capture your unique interest and goals. Our goal is to make you aware of your strengths and weaknesses and allow your program to include the skills and knowledge that you need to reach you personal and professional aspirations.

At AIU you will actually build your own curriculum from courses that are appropriate for your personal and professional goals. Your advisor will make sure that your curriculum is appropriate for your field and complies with the generally accepted norms. Your first task is to select your appropriate courses and to learn about the profession that you want to study in. Next you may want to do a search online for your program and look at a few curriculums. You will soon learn that many of the courses offered at different institutions are similar if not identical. Your job will be to select the required number courses within your field and a research topic for your Dissertation. The number of courses will depend on your experience, transfer credits and professional goals. After you curriculum is set and your courses selected, you will proceed to work on your courses. Initially, we do not provide the student with a list of courses to choose from because the University wants you to compare other programs both domestic and international. In the event that you need assistance in designing your curriculum, one can be presented to you based on your particular situation and career goals. However, it is encouraged that you take the time to explore other programs to be more aware of what is available.

There are many questions students should ask before deciding to enroll in AIU's distance learning program(s). Prospective online students need to determine their level of readiness for independent study before they enter the classroom. Specific areas of weakness and strength may then be easily addressed and academic success assured.

2008-2009 Graduate Scholarship Application

2008-2009 Graduate Scholarship Application
Master's Degree, Educational Specialist Degree, and Post-Baccalaureate Certification Students
(Not School of Social Work Students, Speech-Language Pathology Students, and
Physician Assistant Students)
All material must be submitted by February 14, 2008.

Awards will be made on the basis of three factors: academic promise, normally represented by a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.00 or a graduate GPA of 3.50; professional focus and commitment; and financial need (required for specific scholarships).

File a complete admissions application. It is fully expected that each prospective student who is a scholarship applicant will have a complete admissions application on file with the Office of Graduate Admissions by February 14, 2008. The admissions application provides the supporting documentation necessary to evaluate a scholarship application.

Complete the scholarship application electronically. The scholarship application itself is on a secure server. You must press "yes" if your browser asks you if you wish to display secure items, otherwise Marywood University will not receive any of the information you type on the application upon submission.

If you declare full-time status on the scholarship application, enrollment in nine or more credits in the Fall 2008 and Spring 2009 semesters or what your graduate department defines as full enrollment in structured programs, and are awarded a full-time status scholarship and enroll for less than full-time registration in either of these semesters your scholarship award will be reduced.

If you declare part-time status on your scholarship application, The Committee on Graduate Scholarships expects part-time status students who are scholarship recipients to enroll in and maintain at least six credits in the fall semester and at least six credits in the spring semester. Part-time status scholarship recipients who fail to meet this requirement in a semester will have their scholarships rescinded for that semester.

Email a scholarship essay as a Microsoft Word document. Please type an essay (300-500 words) clarifying the relationship between your life-goals and graduate education at Marywood. Your essay will also be judged on depth of expression and use of the English language. Your essay must clearly address the following areas:

1. Describe your professional work background and experience.

2. Describe your community leadership activities. Indicate if a volunteer activity.

3. Describe any commendations and appreciation awards as well as undergraduate and graduate academic awards and honors.

4. Describe any special projects, demonstrations, workshops, recitals, exhibits, or whatever may be appropriate to your area to indicate your abilities and interests.

5. What are your short and long range career goals and objectives?

6. What attracted you to your Marywood program as a vehicle for achieving your goals?

Email the essay in Microsoft Word to gradscholarship@marywood.edu. Your essay should contain your name, social security number, and field of study at the top of the page.

If you have any questions about completing these forms, please contact Mr. Frank Falcone at gradscholarship@marywood.edu or (570) 348-6211 ext. 2356.

Scholarship selection results will be mailed in early April 2008. Scholarships are available for use beginning Fall 2008; they may only be used to defray tuition for Marywood courses.

Students awarded graduate assistantships for the 2008-2009 academic year who accept those positions are not eligible to receive scholarship awards as well.

Marywood University undergraduate students who are enrolled in formal five-year programs are automatically eligible for at least forty percent of their undergraduate merit award or higher for their fifth year of study at the graduate level provided they are admitted to the master's level by their academic department.

Neither scholarship nor assistantship awards are renewed automatically each year. It is the responsibility of the student to reapply each academic year.

2008 International Dissertation Research Fellowships

Deadline: November 6, 2007 at 9pm EST

The International Dissertation Research Fellowship (IDRF) program supports distinguished graduate students in the humanities and social sciences conducting dissertation research outside the United States. Seventy-five fellowships will be awarded in 2008 with funds provided by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

The IDRF program is committed to scholarship that advances knowledge about non-U.S. cultures and societies grounded in empirical and site-specific research (involving fieldwork, research in archival or manuscript collections, or quantitative data collection). The program promotes research that is situated in a specific discipline and geographical region and is engaged with interdisciplinary and cross-regional perspectives.

Fellowships will provide support for nine to twelve months of dissertation research. Individual awards will be approximately $20,000. No awards will be made for proposals requiring less than nine months of on-site research. The 2008 IDRF fellowship must be held for a single continuous period within the eighteen months between July 2008 and December 2009.

The program is administered by the Social Science Research Council in partnership with the American Council of Learned Societies.

Eligibility
The program is open to full-time graduate students in the humanities and social sciences — regardless of citizenship — enrolled in doctoral programs in the United States. Applicants must complete all Ph.D. requirements except on-site research by the time the fellowship begins or by December 2008, whichever comes first.

The program invites proposals for empirical and site-specific dissertation research outside the United States. It will consider applications for dissertation research grounded in a single site, informed by broader cross-regional and interdisciplinary perspectives, as well as applications for multi-sited, comparative, and transregional research. Proposals that identify the US as a case for comparative inquiry are welcome; however, proposals which focus predominantly or exclusively on the United States are not eligible. Proposals may cover all periods in history, but must address topics that have relevance to contemporary issues and debates.

Students enrolled in Ph.D. programs in public policy, public health, and education, may be eligible to apply if their research projects engage directly with broader theoretical and analytical issues in the humanities and social sciences. The program does not accept applications from Ph.D. programs in law, business, medicine, nursing or journalism. Students who have already received nine months or more of support for dissertation research in one country are not eligible to apply to the IDRF to extend the research time in the same country.

Selection Criteria
The IDRF program is committed to scholarship that advances knowledge about non-U.S. cultures and societies and that is empirical and site specific (involving many kinds of fieldwork and surveys, research in archival or manuscript collections, or quantitative data collection). The program promotes research that is situated in a specific discipline and geographical region and is engaged with interdisciplinary and cross-regional perspectives. Proposals may cover all periods in history, but must address topics that have relevance to contemporary issues and debates.

The IDRF competition thus promotes a range of approaches and research designs beyond single site or single country research, including comparative work at the national and regional levels (that may in some cases rely on secondary literature) and explicit comparison of cases across time frames. The program is open to proposals informed by a range of methodologies in the humanities and social sciences, both quantitative and qualitative, that seek to answer research questions through sustained empirical, site-specific and source-driven investigations. The IDRF program will not support study at foreign universities, conference participation, short research trips abroad or projects relying primarily on labwork.

Applicants are expected to write in clear, intelligible prose for a selection committee that is multi-disciplinary and cross-regional. Proposals should display a thorough knowledge of the major concepts, theories, and methods in the applicant’s discipline and in other related fields as well as a bibliography relevant to the research. Applicants should specify why an extended period of on-site research is critical for successful completion of the proposed doctoral dissertation. The research design of proposals should be realistic in scope, clearly formulated, and responsive to theoretical and methodological concerns. Applicants should provide evidence of having attained an appropriate level of training to undertake the proposed research, including evidence of a degree of language fluency sufficient to complete the project.
