"Big Bang" - Master List-1

"Big Bang" -Master List is a group that intended to participate in another adventure in terms of Technorati authority. This will help you increase your authority link in technoraty, boost your traffic. For me, this is a kind of social blogging activities since one blogger help other to reach the same goal.

If you are interested in watching your authority grow, then just follow the simple rules below. Anyone can play so just have fun. Join "Big Bang" -Master List

You do not have to be tagged to play along. This game is simple and so are the rules.

1. Copy from *Start Copy Here* through *End Copy Here*
2. Add your site(s) to the list. Just be sure to post at each site you add.
3. Tag or don’t tag, your choice, however, the more tags you create the bigger the list will grow.
4. Let me know your blog’s name and url by leaving me a comment HERE. I will add you to the master list. (If you would like the scroll box code, leave me your email address and I will email it to you.)
5. Come back and copy the master list back to your site, often. This process will allow late-comers to get as much link benefit as the first ones in.

PHD fellowship in molecular neuroscience

At the Department of Biomedicine, University of Bergen a 3-year PhD fellowship available immediately to study the cellular and molecular mechanisms of synaptic plasticity. The research aims at elucidating the function of microRNAs in long-term potentiation (LTP) in the adult hippocampus.

Applicants must hold a Master degree in Medicine or Natural Science or equivalent and a strong background in cellular neuroscience and/or microRNA biology. The candidate must have proficiency in spoken and written English.

The candidate will join a multidisciplinary research team with expertise in electrophysiology, imaging, and molecular neuroscience. For further information please contact Professor Clive R. Bramham. (clive.bramham@biomed.uib.no; tel: 47-55586032). Informal enquiries welcome.

The research fellow must take part in the University’s approved PhD programme leading to the degree within a time limit of 3 years. Hence, applicants must meet the formal admission requirements for the PhD programme.

The fellowship is funded by the Norwegian Research Council for a maximum duration of 3 years. The length of the fellowship period may be reduced if the successful applicant has held previous employment as a research fellow.

The starting salary at level 43 (code 1017) on the government scale is 325,800 NOK gross per year (60.9 kUSD; 41.4 kEuro).

The University of Bergen wishes to attain a more equal gender distribution for academic positions. Female applicants are thus strongly encouraged to apply. If several applicants are equally qualified for the position, the internal rules for gender quotas for academic positions will be applied.

State employment shall reflect the multiplicity of the population at large to the highest possible degree. The University of Bergen has therefore adopted a personnel policy objective to ensure that we achieve a balanced age and sex composition and the recruitment of persons of various ethnic backgrounds. Persons of different ethnic backgrounds are therefore encouraged to apply for the position.

France: Postdoc Position in Besancon on Wavelets for Physics

Location: institut UTINAM (UMR CNRS 6213) Besançon, France

Length: 9 months, starting as soon as possible considering the time needed by the person retained to get all the administrative papers necessary to work in France.

Financial conditions:
The credits obtained allow us to warrant a gross salary of 1839 € per month, which in reality means 1508 € per month transferred on the bank account.

Requested profile:
The applicant should preferentially have with experience in numerical analysis concerning implementation of the fast wavelet transform in fortran. Experience of parallelization and/or knowledge of Green’s function techniques and/or knowledge of the scattering matrix formalism in optics would be a plus, but are not required.

In any case, the person retained must have completed his/her PHD since less than 2 years and NOT be of French nationality! Therefore, the applicants should enclose in their application, considerations allowing assessing the time they would need to get the authorization to work in France.

Summary of the project:
Since more than 10 years, we have been carrying theoretical studies concerning carbon nanotubes, first in the framework of the French CNRS research group GDR n°1752, then in the European research group GDR-E n°2756). In parallel, we got interested in applying the fast wavelet transform to speed up our simulations which require resolution of integral equations by Green’s function techniques. The limiting step is most of the time the resolution of large and dense systems of linear equations. The idea was to consider the matrix of the system just as an image and to use the fast wavelet transform and a thresholding process to sparsify it. The resulting sparse system is solved by means of specialized techniques and the solution inverse transformed. This was already part of the subject of Rachel Langlet’s PHD thesis co-supervised by Martin Meyer (Mathematics lab of Besançon) and Michel Devel (UTINAM institute of Besançon), with a great help from Yiwei LI (Xidian University, China) during and after his one-month visit in Besançon in July 2004. Thanks to these efforts we now have several pieces of fortran 90 codes, which implement this algorithm for real matrices (of arbitrary size, not necessarily a power of 2), with various levels of refinement. First experiments indicate that we can indeed use far less memory than with the traditional LAPACK based code and also gain in computation speed.

The goal of this post-doc would be to apply the same technique with complex coefficient matrices and possibly parallelize it. This would allow us to simulate interaction with light of carbon nanotubes or carbonaceous soot, with sizes closer to the actual experimental size of these objects than what we can presently do with the LAPACK based code. Cooperation with experimentalists in these fields is already under way.

Spain: Master Scholarships in Economics and Finance, CEMFI, Madrid

Scholarships for the Graduate Program in Economics and Finance

CEMFI, Madrid (Spain)

The basic graduate offering at CEMFI consists of its Master in Economics and Finance and its PhD program in Economics. Unlike many Master programs in the US and elsewhere, ours is self-contained and offers a well respected qualification.

CEMFI grants a subset of its Master students exemptions from the tuition fee and/or scholarships for living expenses amounting up to EUR 10,000 per year. They are granted according to academic merit. Also, the Fundación Carolina, in cooperation with the Fundación BBVA, has endowed four scholarships for Latin American students of the Master. These scholarships amount to 1,200 euros per month for housing and subsistence, over 19 months, plus 2 additional months for students who participate in a Summer internship program. They also cover the Master’s tuition, travel expenses and medical insurance.

An important distinguishing feature of our Master is that it lasts for two years, the second being essential for shaping the skills of our graduates, as follows. First year: Basic graduate course work and some optional subjects. Second year: Specialized courses and research training through a Master thesis. Our ratio of students to faculty is between four and five. Thus we can devote a lot of attention to each student. This is particularly important for the Master thesis, where the faculty provides guidance to a unique degree.

Members of CEMFI’s faculty publish in top journals and are research leaders in their fields. They also edit prestigious journals and are key players at leading learned societies such as the European Economic Association and the Econometric Society.

Our Master students get very good jobs as economists. For example, in positions dealing with portfolio and risk management, macroeconomic forecasting, policy evaluation, or microeconomic consultancy. Our reputation is 20 years old and CEMFI provides a strong signal of quality, regularly confirmed by the market. Moreover, we run an experienced and efficient job placement service.

Students interested in furthering their research training, either because they aim at a professional career with a stronger research content or because they aim at an academic position, will continue to develop their research skills for another three years and complete the PhD program. Papers from CEMFI’s dissertations have been published in top journals and we have an excellent record in the PhD job market.

Admission to PhD dissertation work at CEMFI is through the Master. All students admitted to the PhD program obtain a scholarship, either from an external source or from CEMFI.

For more information on admission and scholarship applications, please visit: http://www.cemfi.es. For any queries, feel free to contact: admissions[ at ]cemfi.es.

Application has to be received by 7. April 2008.
