Expressions of interest are sought for two PhD scholarship positions to carry out field research in Indonesia on community, environment and local governance issues.
The successful candidates will work with a team of experienced researchers - Dr Greg Acciaioli (UWA), A/Prof Anton Lucas and Dr Jim Schiller (Flinders), Dr John McCarthy (ANU), and A/Prof Carol Warren (Murdoch), as well as collaborating researchers in the Netherlands and Indonesia on an Australian Research Council Discovery Project entitled `Social Capital, Natural Resources and Local Governance in Indonesia`. The project will focus on case studies of local decision-making on environmental issues in the context of conservation and development programs in different regions of Indonesia. It aims to improve understanding of contemporary community dynamics in a range of cultural and ecological settings, as well as the practical implications of local participation and capacity building interventions for achieving equity and sustainability outcomes.
The two candidates will be based at Flinders University in Adelaide and Murdoch University in Perth respectively, with location and supervision determined by the focus and site of each student`s component of the project. It is anticipated that one student will work in a coastal community where marine conservation issues are the focus of research, while the second student will focus on a primarily agrarian research site in which World Bank / AusAID / NGO local capacity building, conservation and development projects are being conducted.
Essential criteria include:
* a first-class Honours or Masters degree with a thesis component in a relevant social science field
* advanced fluency in Indonesian language
* field research or other equivalent community/overseas experience
* ability to work independently and as part of a team

Each scholarship is for a three-year period with a stipend of $25,118 per annum (tax free) and up to $10,000 of additional funding for fieldwork in Indonesia. A relocation allowance will be provided where a move to Adelaide or Perth is required to join the project.
A shortlist will be determined by the research team in September, at which point applicants will be requested to submit full formal applications and documentation to either Flinders or Murdoch University. The successful candidates are expected to take up their appointments no later than February 2009.

Ireland: Research Positions in Software Appliance Anomaly Detection
Applications are invited by well-qualified applicants for an MSc (by research) and PhD position in the application of statistical machine learning techniques to anomaly detection in software appliances (firewalls etc).
Supported by a major manufacturer, the project will involve the development of new approaches for predictive modelling of measured signals, adaptive learning and inference of fault conditions. The project is supported by a dedicated hardware testbed and as part of the project the developed detection approaches will be implemented in order to evaluate performance in realistic environments.

FINANCIAL AID:
Students on the residential track will work as research assistants at the EDHEC Risk and Asset Management Research Centre, as research assistants to senior finance faculty, or as teaching assistants (TA) in the department of accounting, law, finance and economics. In return for their part-time duties with the school, residential track participants will receive a full tuition waiver plus competitive RA/TA compensation. Sweden: Africa Guest Researchers’ Scholarship Program, Nordic Africa Institute
This scholarship programme is directed at scholars in Africa, engaged in research on the African continent. Female researchers are especially encouraged to apply for these scholarships.

The purpose of the programme
One important task of the Nordic Africa Institute is to establish and maintain relations with African research communities. This is inter alia carried out through a Guest Researchers’ Scholarship Programme, the aim of which is to provide opportunities for its participants to pursue their own research projects, thereby indirectly strengthening the academic milieux in African countries, and promoting scholarly exchange with Nordic research communities.
Who can apply?
The Guest Researchers’ Scholarship Programme is directed at senior scholars in Africa engaged in research on/about the African continent with a proven track record of extensive post-graduate research experiences. We would especially like to encourage women to apply for these scholarships.
Applications are invited from scholars preferably with research projects related to the following current research themes at the Institute:

The scholarship and facilities

USD 30) a day (maximum SEK 25,000 for 90 days) plus an installation grant of SEK 2,500 (approx. USD 300), a shared office and free photocopying facilities up to a maximum of 1,000 copies. Guest Researchers have access to a computer/MS Word at the office and have to do their own typing.
The maximum duration of the stay is 90 days. If the Guest Researcher spends less than 90 days at the Institute, the scholarship of SEK 25,000 is reduced proportionally. To be entitled to the travel costs, the Guest Researcher has to stay for at least two months.
Please note that most academic institutions in the Nordic countries, including the Nordic Africa Institute, are closed or at least running at a reduced capacity during the periods 15 June–15 August and 15 December–15 January. Applicants are thus asked to avoid these periods.
The Institute’s library is specialized in literature on contemporary Africa. Guest researchers also have access to the Uppsala University Library, the Dag Hammarskjöld Library and the Library of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences.
Expected commitments
As a part of the exchange between the guest researchers and the Nordic institutions, each Guest Researcher is expected to participate in the public lectures at the Institute and to make a lecture tour to at least one other Nordic country. Train or special fare air tickets and accommodation will be provided for this trip.
Sometimes, the Institute also invites the Guest Researcher to write a short article for its website.

The Institute’s library is specialized in literature on contemporary Africa. Guest researchers also have access to the Uppsala University Library, the Dag Hammarskjöld Library and the Library of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences.
Expected commitments
As a part of the exchange between the guest researchers and the Nordic institutions, each Guest Researcher is expected to participate in the public lectures at the Institute and to make a lecture tour to at least one other Nordic country. Train or special fare air tickets and accommodation will be provided for this trip.
Sometimes, the Institute also invites the Guest Researcher to write a short article for its website.

A Research Studentship position is available on an EPSRC funded research project in the study of interacting turbulent flames using DNS and laser diagnostics. This project involves collaboration with Rolls-Royce Plc. and Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery Ltd. in the UK. The main aim of the project is to develop close understanding of interacting turbulent premixed flames using Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) methodology and laser diagnostics. The interacting flames are one of the fundamental root cause for "noisy" combustion, but this is still a terra incognita for modelling. The research student will be involved in the experimental part of the project but there will be constant interaction between the experimental and computational parts. The Ph.D student will work closely with one of investigators and will be using state of the art multi-scalar imaging and particle image velocimetry (PIV) facilities available in the Engineering Department.

DESIRE is an integrated geoscientific project to study the control of lithospheric structure on the occurrence and development of seismicity and dynamics in the pull-apart basin of the Dead Sea. Partners from research institutes and universities in Germany, Israel, Jordan and Palestine collaborate in the DESIRE project funded by the DFG, the GFZ and the BGR. DESIRE consist of five interlocked experiments and modeling approaches (GPS; seismics & magnetotellurics; airborne gravimetry, seismology, seismicity & radon; geodynamic modeling). Some of the key questions of plate tectonics to be addressed at this world geological site are:
* How are stress & strain distributed in time & space
* What are relations of geological & human time-scale deformation processes
* What controls & influences EQ depth & distribution?
Tasks:
The successful candidate will apply and improve existing GPS processing software, apply and develop FEM to model the expected deformation, and will be interested in interdisciplinary research. He/She will be involved in the interpretation of the observed surface deformation as well as in the interpretation of all results gained within the project or elsewhere with the aim to answer the questions stated above.

Job Summary
At the Department of Mathematics a position as research fellow (PhD positions) is open for 4 years from 1 January 2008. The aim of the PhD project is to develop computer-aided mathematical methods for the study of continuous dynamical systems. Basic knowledge of interval analysis, dynamical systems, ordinary differential equations, numerical analysis and programming is of merit.
Job Description

The Post baccalaureate Research and Education Program (PREP) at the University of New Mexico
Program Description:
Use that hard earned BA/BS degree as a full time research scholar AND get ready to take your career to the next level!
So you have just graduated or you are about to graduate with a degree in Science, Mathematics, or Engineering and you want to go to graduate school but feel you need one more year to gain research experience and to fill in those last few deficiencies in order to be highly successful. You are not alone. Many recent graduates feel they need just a little more time, experience and direction before entering the graduate program of their choice.
The UNM PREP program offers recent graduates, with BA/BS degrees from a variety science, mathematics and engineering programs, the opportunity to work full time in a biomedical related research laboratory, while taking courses and attending seminars that will better prepare them to apply and be accepted into a biomedical related graduate program.
Scholars will work and be paid a full time salary to carry out original independent research under the mentorship of a research active professor at the University of New Mexico. While working full time as a research scientist, scholars will be given the opportunity to take courses to eliminate any deficiencies they may have, attend regular scientific seminars, and take part in short courses offered by the PREP program in connection with other on-campus research and education programs on how to take the GRE and apply to graduate school. Finally all scholars, under the direction of their research mentors, will apply to a graduate program of their choice.
Eligibility:
Students must meet program eligibility requirements. Basic eligibility requirements are that participants must be a U.S. Citizen or permanent resident with a completed baccalaureate degree (BA/BS) in Math, Science or Engineering prior to first day of program. Have decided for one reason or another to postpone graduate studies. Can demonstrate commitment to the pursuit of a PhD in the biomedical related field (i.e. Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Mathematics, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Cell Biology etc.). Must be an individual belonging to a particular ethnic, racial, or other underrepresented (i.e. economically disadvantaged, first generation college graduate, etc) group that has been determined by the grantee institution to be underrepresented in biomedical related research fields. Must possess a 3.0 GPA or better. Applicants with a cumulative GPA of less than 3.0 will be considered on a case by case basis.
PREP is designed to prepare underrepresented minority students who hold a recent baccalaureate degree to pursue a Ph.D. degree in the biomedical sciences. Students whose primary career goal is medicine (M.D. or M.D./Ph.D degrees) are encouraged to explore post-baccalaureate opportunities on the American Association of Medical Colleges website.

The goal of our Master's degree program is to train the next generation of researchers and leaders to advance the science of Biomedical and Health Informatics. Our M.S. program is research-focused; students must complete a thesis that aims at solving a research problem in the science of biomedical and health informatics. When broadly defined, we believe that a research-focused M.S. thesis can help our students achieve a broad range of career goals in the variety of domains that comprise BHI.
Our cross-cutting themes provide a more general vision statement for our graduate programs (MS and PhD) and the broad themes and goals we value in biomedical & health informatics education.
The core curriculum for our M.S. program is built around eight courses, and students may also select from the wide range of related courses available from BHI-affiliated programs, as well as the UW catalog as a whole.

Summer Undergraduate Research 2007
The Summer Undergraduate Research Program provides paid internship opportunities for students to work intensively with faculty on research projects for ten weeks during the summer. The program's goals are to introduce students to research projects in Biomedical and Health Informatics, to facilitate contact with faculty, and to increase awareness among undergraduates about this emerging field. Biomedical and Health Informatics studies the acquisition, maintenance, retrieval and application of biomedical knowledge and information to improve patient care, medical education and health sciences research. Students are expected to present their research projects at the end of the program in a mini symposium. Titles of past undergraduate projects are available for browsing.
Eligibility for the Summer Undergraduate Research Program is limited to students who are either attending a college in the State of Washington or Washington residents going to college outside of the state. Seniors graduating in the Spring or Summer of 2007 are not eligible for the program.
In 2007, we expect to offer 5 - 7 students positions with various faculty in the Division of Biomedical and Health Informatics. Applicants should browse all of our research projects web pages to get an idea of the breadth of work carried out by the UW BHI group. This year, the following faculty have indicated that they are willing to mentor summer undergraduates. These faculty usually have specific projects in mind that fit within their research interests, and you may wish to browse their web pages to understand more about these. Most of the funding for SURP comes from research grants led by these faculty and is earmarked toward specific research goals. Applicants are encouraged to contact these faculty to ask questions or find out more about this summer's opportunities.
