[UK] International Undergraduate IT and Engineering Scholarships

The following IT and engineering scholarships are available to students studying engineering related degree courses in Zimbabwe, China, India, Malaysia, Singapore and Sri Lanka:

China (3 awards available - RMB 5,000 each)
Awarded to an outstanding student in any year of a degree course in I.T., electrical, electronic or manufacturing engineering in China.

India (5 awards available - Rs 17,000 each)
Awarded to outstanding students in the second or third year of a degree course in I.T., electrical, electronic or manufacturing engineering in India.

Malaysia (3 awards available - RM 2,000 Malaysian Ringgits each)
Awarded to outstanding students in the final year of a degree course in I.T., electrical, electronic or manufacturing engineering in Malaysia.

Zimbabwe (Number of awards: discretionary, Value: discretionary (minimum £500))
To assist needy electrical, electronic, manufacturing or information engineering students who are citizens of either Zimbabwe, or the UK, in the furtherance of their studies.

Singapore (3 award available - $1,000 each)
Awarded to exceptional students in the second year of a degree course in I.T., electrical, electronic or manufacturing engineering in Singapore.

Australia: Software Engineering Research Scholarship

Project title:
Probabilistic Verification and Model-Based Quality Evaluation

Research topic:
Model Based Development (MBD) has established itself as the key approach to software engineering of increasingly complex systems in automotive and aerospace domains. It has proved successful at managing complexity associated with functionality. A new approach is to use model-based techniques also for quality evaluation and predictions. Since most of quality attributes such as performance, reliability, availability, safety, and security have a probabilistic nature, probabilistic verification techniques are the best solution to perform model-based quality evaluation. The research project shall explore the possibilities of probabilistic modelling and verification techniques to reason about quality attributes early in the software development lifecycle. To get a detailed introduction into this research project please have a look at the following background literature:

We require:
We are interested in a PhD student who has an excellent academic record (first class honours or equivalent with marks above 85%) with background in one or more of the following areas:
-probabilistic logics and probabilistic verification
-probabilistic model checking
-quality attributes such as performance, reliability, availability, safety, and security
-software engineering (in the areas of embedded systems, robotics, etc. )
-software architectures and architecture evaluation
-formal methods in system design
-statistics

Since this project involves working with other PhD students and industrial partner, communication skills and the ability to work in a team environment are especially required.

UK: Masters in Petroleum Engineering Scholarships - Imperial College London

The Centre for Petroleum Studies at Imperial College London are looking for students for its Master of Science in Petroleum Engineering Scholarship. Imperial College is ranked fifth among the best universities in the world (2007) .

The degree course in Petroleum Engineering operates as a 12-month intensive “conversion” Naturally, equip graduates in science and engineering disciplines other with the academic and technical specialties necessary for the exercise as a petroleum engineer in the oil and related services industries. The course is also desirable, before embarking on more focused research programmes doctorate.

The course is designed for those with industrial experience and for new graduates to find a career in the oil industry. The course begins in early October, and will result in obtaining a Master of Science (MSc) degree and diploma from Imperial College (DIC).


The minimum qualification for admission is a First Class Honours degree (or eqivalent) in science or engineering from a British university or its European equivalet in a university or abroad.

The MSc course is supported by grants and fellowships by the oil industry (the United Kingdom and overseas), which cover subsistence costs of college, course notes and work on spending. These are only available to British students and CE. Master’s awards interviews will be held on 2 and 3 June 2008. Applicants must apply before May 31, 2008.

Sweden: PhD Student Positions at the School of Electrical Engineering, Royal Institute of Technology

The Communication Theory Lab is conducting research and education in the general area of digital communications and in wireless communications in particular. PhD: Development of a Surgical Force & Motion Analysis System

The Department of Biomechanical Engineering coordinates education and research activities in the field of mechanical engineering techniques, including modeling and design, to analyze the interaction between medical, biological and technical systems. An important aspect of the research topics is how surgeons control their instruments during complex surgical procedures. For more information see www.misit.nl.

Job description
Minimally invasive surgical techniques require special manual skills. Accurate control of the surgical instruments is of utmost importance for dexterous performance and patient safety. To obtain automated assessment of dexterity, registration of instrument motion and forces is necessary. Combining motion analysis with an analysis of the forces enables the development of metrics and feedback systems to support the surgeon. In this project, the PhD student will integrate motion capture of the surgical instruments with force sensing into one measurement system, as well as develop analysis tools for assessment of skills in surgical tasks. The developed measurement and analysis tools should finally result in the clinical implementation of a surgical training system. The international nature of the research offers opportunities to travel and to work abroad. An applicability orientation is reflected by the department’s support to start-up companies.

The project is funded by Medical Delta - Health, Science & Technology (www.medicaldelta.nl), a consortium of Delft University of Technology, Erasmus University Rotterdam, Erasmus University Medical Centre Rotterdam (Erasmus MC), Leiden University and Leiden University Medical Centre (LUMC). The research is conducted in close collaboration with LUMC and covers one clinical PhD student at LUMC and one in Biomechanical Engineering at DUT.

Requirements
The Department of Biomechanical Engineering is looking for outstanding engineers with an M.Sc. degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and/or biomedical engineering. The candidate should have a broad interest in mechanical design and sensor technology, preferably with experience in the field of human-machine interaction. Experience in programming languages such as Matlab or C++ is a requisite. The candidate must have an affinity for working in the medical field.
