UK: Masters in Petroleum Engineering Scholarships - Imperial College London

The Centre for Petroleum Studies at Imperial College London are looking for students for its Master of Science in Petroleum Engineering Scholarship. Imperial College is ranked fifth among the best universities in the world (2007) .

The degree course in Petroleum Engineering operates as a 12-month intensive “conversion” Naturally, equip graduates in science and engineering disciplines other with the academic and technical specialties necessary for the exercise as a petroleum engineer in the oil and related services industries. The course is also desirable, before embarking on more focused research programmes doctorate.

The course is designed for those with industrial experience and for new graduates to find a career in the oil industry. The course begins in early October, and will result in obtaining a Master of Science (MSc) degree and diploma from Imperial College (DIC).


The minimum qualification for admission is a First Class Honours degree (or eqivalent) in science or engineering from a British university or its European equivalet in a university or abroad.

The MSc course is supported by grants and fellowships by the oil industry (the United Kingdom and overseas), which cover subsistence costs of college, course notes and work on spending. These are only available to British students and CE. Master’s awards interviews will be held on 2 and 3 June 2008. Applicants must apply before May 31, 2008.

Master Gardeners 2008-2009 Scholarship, Iowa State University Extension

The ISU Linn County Extension Master Gardeners Scholarship is available to graduating seniors who are residents of Linn County and who attend high schools in Linn County. The scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior seeking a degree in the field of horticulture at an Iowa college or university.

The one year Scholarship will be awarded in the amount of $1000.00. To receive this Scholarship the recipient must be officially enrolled at a chosen Iowa college. Half ($500.00) will be awarded at the beginning of the first semester, and the second half ($500.00) will be awarded at the beginning of the second semester. To receive payment the recipient must provide official enrollment status from the college to the Linn County Master Gardeners’ office. The money will be deposited to the recipient’s college financial account.

Job description
Minimally invasive surgical techniques require special manual skills. Accurate control of the surgical instruments is of utmost importance for dexterous performance and patient safety. To obtain automated assessment of dexterity, registration of instrument motion and forces is necessary. Combining motion analysis with an analysis of the forces enables the development of metrics and feedback systems to support the surgeon. In this project, the PhD student will integrate motion capture of the surgical instruments with force sensing into one measurement system, as well as develop analysis tools for assessment of skills in surgical tasks. The developed measurement and analysis tools should finally result in the clinical implementation of a surgical training system. The international nature of the research offers opportunities to travel and to work abroad. An applicability orientation is reflected by the department’s support to start-up companies.

The project is funded by Medical Delta - Health, Science & Technology (www.medicaldelta.nl), a consortium of Delft University of Technology, Erasmus University Rotterdam, Erasmus University Medical Centre Rotterdam (Erasmus MC), Leiden University and Leiden University Medical Centre (LUMC). The research is conducted in close collaboration with LUMC and covers one clinical PhD student at LUMC and one in Biomechanical Engineering at DUT.

Requirements
The Department of Biomechanical Engineering is looking for outstanding engineers with an M.Sc. degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and/or biomedical engineering. The candidate should have a broad interest in mechanical design and sensor technology, preferably with experience in the field of human-machine interaction. Spain: Master Scholarships in Economics and Finance, CEMFI, Madrid

Scholarships for the Graduate Program in Economics and Finance

CEMFI, Madrid (Spain)

The basic graduate offering at CEMFI consists of its Master in Economics and Finance and its PhD program in Economics. Unlike many Master programs in the US and elsewhere, ours is self-contained and offers a well respected qualification.

CEMFI grants a subset of its Master students exemptions from the tuition fee and/or scholarships for living expenses amounting up to EUR 10,000 per year. They are granted according to academic merit. Also, the Fundación Carolina, in cooperation with the Fundación BBVA, has endowed four scholarships for Latin American students of the Master. These scholarships amount to 1,200 euros per month for housing and subsistence, over 19 months, plus 2 additional months for students who participate in a Summer internship program. They also cover the Master’s tuition, travel expenses and medical insurance.

An important distinguishing feature of our Master is that it lasts for two years, the second being essential for shaping the skills of our graduates, as follows. First year: Basic graduate course work and some optional subjects. Second year: Specialized courses and research training through a Master thesis. Our ratio of students to faculty is between four and five. Thus we can devote a lot of attention to each student. This is particularly important for the Master thesis, where the faculty provides guidance to a unique degree.

Members of CEMFI’s faculty publish in top journals and are research leaders in their fields. They also edit prestigious journals and are key players at leading learned societies such as the European Economic Association and the Econometric Society.

Our Master students get very good jobs as economists. For example, in positions dealing with portfolio and risk management, macroeconomic forecasting, policy evaluation, or microeconomic consultancy. Our reputation is 20 years old and CEMFI provides a strong signal of quality, regularly confirmed by the market. Moreover, we run an experienced and efficient job placement service.

Students interested in furthering their research training, either because they aim at a professional career with a stronger research content or because they aim at an academic position, will continue to develop their research skills for another three years and complete the PhD program. Belgium: 2008-2009 VLIR-UOS Scholarship Programme for Master and PhD

The international study opportunities include the VLIR funded International Courses (ICPs) and the International Training Programmes (ITPs).

Every year, with the support of the Belgian Directorate-General for Development Cooperation (DGDC), VLIR awards scholarships to students from developing countries to study one of the 15 ICPs or one of the 6 ITPs.

Each year there are a maximum of 180 scholarships available for first-year ICP students and a maximum of 70 scholarships for ITP participants.

Although these programmes primarily address students and professionals from developing countries, they are also open to other people.

Special Graduate Program on Engineering for Systems Innovation - The University of Tokyo

Graduate School of Engineering (Three Departments), The University of Tokyo, offer advanced study and research opportunities to foreign students in the framework of the Special Graduate Program on Engineering for Systems Innovation (“the Special Program”).

The program offers:
• Master’s (2 years)
• Doctoral (3 years)
courses leading to the degrees of Master of Engineering and Doctor of Engineering degrees in the Three Departments, respectively.

Those accepted to Special Graduate Program on Engineering for Systems Innovation will be enrolled in the winter semester which begins on October 1, 2008. Research and instruction are conducted both in English and in Japanese. Japanese language courses are offered by the Department of Systems Innovation.

The students for Special Graduate Program on Engineering for Systems Innovation will be selected primarily based on academic qualification. To be eligible for admission to the Master’s program an applicant must hold Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. 2008-2009 Graduate Scholarship Application
Master's Degree, Educational Specialist Degree, and Post-Baccalaureate Certification Students
(Not School of Social Work Students, Speech-Language Pathology Students, and
Physician Assistant Students)
All material must be submitted by February 14, 2008.

Awards will be made on the basis of three factors: academic promise, normally represented by a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.00 or a graduate GPA of 3.50; professional focus and commitment; and financial need (required for specific scholarships).

File a complete admissions application. It is fully expected that each prospective student who is a scholarship applicant will have a complete admissions application on file with the Office of Graduate Admissions by February 14, 2008. The admissions application provides the supporting documentation necessary to evaluate a scholarship application.

Complete the scholarship application electronically. The scholarship application itself is on a secure server. You must press "yes" if your browser asks you if you wish to display secure items, otherwise Marywood University will not receive any of the information you type on the application upon submission.

If you declare full-time status on the scholarship application, enrollment in nine or more credits in the Fall 2008 and Spring 2009 semesters or what your graduate department defines as full enrollment in structured programs, and are awarded a full-time status scholarship and enroll for less than full-time registration in either of these semesters your scholarship award will be reduced.

If you declare part-time status on your scholarship application, The Committee on Graduate Scholarships expects part-time status students who are scholarship recipients to enroll in and maintain at least six credits in the fall semester and at least six credits in the spring semester. Part-time status scholarship recipients who fail to meet this requirement in a semester will have their scholarships rescinded for that semester.

Email a scholarship essay as a Microsoft Word document. Please type an essay (300-500 words) clarifying the relationship between your life-goals and graduate education at Marywood. Your essay will also be judged on depth of expression and use of the English language. Your essay must clearly address the following areas:

1. Describe your professional work background and experience.

2. Describe your community leadership activities. Indicate if a volunteer activity.

3. Describe any commendations and appreciation awards as well as undergraduate and graduate academic awards and honors.

4. Describe any special projects, demonstrations, workshops, recitals, exhibits, or whatever may be appropriate to your area to indicate your abilities and interests.

5. What are your short and long range career goals and objectives?

6. What attracted you to your Marywood program as a vehicle for achieving your goals?

Scholarship selection results will be mailed in early April 2008. Scholarships are available for use beginning Fall 2008; they may only be used to defray tuition for Marywood courses.

Students awarded graduate assistantships for the 2008-2009 academic year who accept those positions are not eligible to receive scholarship awards as well.

Marywood University undergraduate students who are enrolled in formal five-year programs are automatically eligible for at least forty percent of their undergraduate merit award or higher for their fifth year of study at the graduate level provided they are admitted to the master's level by their academic department.

Neither scholarship nor assistantship awards are renewed automatically each year. It is the responsibility of the student to reapply each academic year.

Masters/PhD Scholarship in Software Defined Radio Systems, National University of Ireland, Maynooth

Applications are invited for a Masters/PhD studentship in the area of interoperability of software defined radio systems. This area of research, led by Dr. Ronan Farrell, as part of substantial ongoing activities in the Institute of Microelectronics and Wireless Systems in the area of reconfigurable radio systems. This project is part of a larger collaborative research programme within the SFI Centre for Telecommunications Value-Chain Research (CTVR)

As the number of reconfigurable radio platforms increase, both hardware and software components, it is increasingly difficult to ascertain the relative performance of these systems and the level of interoperability between the different hardware and software elements. Existing solutions in this space are overwhelmingly complex. The research will focus on tools and techniques to assess the performance of measure and accurately quantify the capabilities of the various platforms currently available, and then to propose a low-cost interface for encouraging interoperability between hardware and software platforms.

Candidates should hold a first or upper second class honours degree in Electronic Engineering, Computer Science or a cognate discipline. Interest, and preferably experience, in the area of software engineering, telecommunications and electronics systems is essential.

Successful candidates will join a large multi-disciplinary team and be initially enrolled on a full-time Masters of Engineering Science, with a review after 18 months for progression to a PhD programme.

The studentship will comprise of fees and an annual stipend of 17,000 Euros. It will be initially awarded for a period of 18 months years, extendable upon satisfactory review to a subsequent 18 months. The position is available immediately though, upon agreement, the start date may be postponed to January 2008.

The Field

As mutually informing concepts, the terms of our Field “text,” “community” and “discourse,” suggest the power of texts to reflect and to shape both communities of origin and communities of reception. The Program also focuses critical attention on the kinds of negotiation - both material and theoretical - attending the production, performance and reception of texts. Literary and textual problems acquire richer significance when viewed in relation to the ways in which texts, both literary and non-literary, are produced and used in the often conflicting discourses that constitute the culture of a community.
The field is strongly supported by the Department’s research expertise. Department members are currently actively researching the intersections of texts, communities and discourses in a wide range of areas.




Course Requirements

This Program includes a preferred Major Research Paper Option and is designed to be completed in twelve months. A thesis option is also available under exceptional circumstances, with approval of the Graduate Director.

Major Research Paper Option

All students are required to take the two core courses, ENGL 5P00 and 5P01. Major Research Paper students must take four additional courses, from the variable topics offerings.

Research Paper students will with the guidance of the Graduate Director arrange for a supervisor and a second reader and shall choose a topic in consultation with the supervisor, the second reader and the Graduate Director.

Thesis Option

All students are required to take the two core courses, ENGL 5P00 and 5P01. Thesis students take two additional courses, from the variable topics offerings.

A Thesis student may, with the permission of the Graduate Director, arrange for a thesis supervisor; the student and the supervisor will, with a supervisory committee appointed by the Graduate Director, choose a thesis topic.

There are two required courses, ENGL 5P00, “Theoretical Foundations,” and ENGL 5P01, “Graduate Seminar in Research and Professional Development.” With the permission of the Graduate Director a student may take a course from one of the other MA programs in the university or a reading course/tutorial (ENGL 5P02) in place of a course from the variable topics list (“5V—” courses).

Survey and critical analysis of a broad range of theories bearing on the relation of literary texts to cultural formations.

ENGL 5P01 — “Graduate Seminar in Research and Professional Development” Professor Martin Danahay

Topics such as the nature and requirements of academic work, research methodologies, research resources, the nature and requirements of the graduate thesis and research paper, the development of the research proposal, focused discussion of research and design strategies for the work proposed, the development of and adherence to a schedule, preparation of conference proposals and public presentations.

ENGL 5P02 — “Graduate Tutorial”

Research course with directed study and regular meetings with a faculty member, covering topics not offered in a designated course. Requires permission of the Graduate Director.

ENGL5V51 — “Women Writing Genealogy in Recent Canadian Fiction” Professor Neta Gordon

Exploring discursive frameworks for the relationship between principles governing conceptions of family and the narration of a family's story in the work of authors such as SKY Lee, Carol Shields, Ann-Marie MacDonald, Dionne Brand, and Barbara Gowdy.

ENGL 5V70 — “King Arthur in Popular Fiction and Culture for Young People” Professor Ann Howey

Examination of discursive practices used in literature and popular culture to rewrite the Arthurian legend for young people. After beginning with selections from Malory and Tennyson, we will study primarily twentieth-century novels and films to consider issues of narrative address and audience; censorship and appropriate content; socialization and gender roles.

Winter Term 2007-2008:

In this term the students will register in their Research Paper course and begin work on the paper itself.



ENGL 5V22 — “Jane Austen: Competing Communities” Professor Barbara Seeber

The complete works of Austen in the context of literary histories and contemporary approaches focusing on gender, sexuality, and empire.

ENGL 5V81 — “The Politics of Language: Authority, Consensus and the Standard ” Professor Jaclyn Rea

Examination of ideologies of language as they operate in complex and varied locales. Study of how commonsense beliefs about Standard English might cooperate with larger discourses of colonialism, nationalism, gender, race and morality.

Summer Term 2008:

In this term students complete their Research Paper.
