[USA] University of San Francisco International Business Plan Competition

The USF PSI International Business Plan Competition is one of the World`s Premier Graduate University Business Plan Competitions. The 2007 Contest will be held March 28 - 31. All Graduate Students from every nation are invited to submit business plan proposals for participation.

Total Awards for the 2007 Competition will total approximately $25,000; however, the real prize is the chance for your students to offer their business proposals before dozens of leading Silicon Valley Venture Capitalists and Chief Executives. Judges from our previous competitions have included venture capital partners with: Kleiner Perkins, Crosslink Capital, Draper Fisher Jurvetson, DeNovo Ventures, Hummer Winblad Venture Partners, Nth Power, Garage Technology Ventures, Globespan Capital, and many more; such as those featured in the USF Silicon Valley Venture Capitalist Confidence Index (Bloomber ticker: USFSVVCI)

As the only University Business Plan Competition in Silicon Valley open to complete graduate teams from other universities, the USF Competition provides a unique entrepreneurial opportunity for all graduate students. CNET covered part of last year`s event.

2007 Olive W. Garvey Fellowship Essay Competition

Top Essays To Be Awarded $2,500 (Students) or $10,000 (Untenured Faculty)

The Independent Institute is pleased to announce the 2007 Olive W. Garvey Fellowship Essay Competition. Cash prizes will be awarded to outstanding college students — and untenured “junior” faculty — from around the world through a competitive essay contest.

The 2007 Garvey Fellowship Prizes will be awarded for the best essay on the topic: “Is foreign aid the solution to global poverty?”

A panel of three judges will look for the best essays related to the topic — original essays distinguished by their clarity, rigor, and eloquence. The essays need not be technical or demonstrate hyper-specialized scholarship, although they should be serious in content, tone, and style. Held biennially, the Garvey Fellowship is intended to encourage and reward scholarship pertaining to the meaning and significance of economic and personal liberties.

STUDENT DIVISION: College students up to the age of 35:
First Prize: $2,500
Second Prize: $1,500
Third prize: $1,000br />

FACULTY DIVISION: Junior faculty members up to the age of 35 and not yet tenured:
First Prize: $10,000
Second Prize: $5,000
Third Prize: $1,500

ELIGIBILITY:

1. Student Division: Any student 35 years or younger enrolled at a recognized college or university anywhere in the world.
2. Junior Faculty Division: Untenured college or university teachers, Assistant Professor or higher, 35 years or younger.

LENGTH: Student essays must not exceed 3,000 words. Teacher essays must be 5,000 to 8,000 words long.

[UK] Overseas Research Students Awards Scheme (OSR/ORSAS) at Newcastle University

The Overseas Research Students Awards Scheme (ORS or ORSAS) grants awards on a competitive basis to international postgraduate research students of outstanding merit and research potential.

The number of scholarships available at Newcastle under this scheme varies, but the University’s success rate in recent years has been very good (in 2004, 24 awards were given to Newcastle students).

Awards are made:

* for full-time research programmes only
* initially for one year but may be extended up to a maximum of three years

What does the scholarship cover?

* the difference between the tuition fee for a home (UK) postgraduate student, and the fee chargeable to an international postgraduate student
* and does not cover living expenses.

Eligibility
You could be eligible for the ORS scholarship if:
  • you have been offered a place on any full-time research degree programme, in any field of study (except an Integrated PhD programme)
  • you have been assessed as overseas for fees purposes, and are wholly or partially self-financing
  • you intend to register to start your studies during the 2007-08 academic year

Existing students in their first year of study are also eligible to apply for one of these awards. Students in the first year of an Integrated PhD programme are eligible to apply for an ORS award. Students entering the third year of their research programme will not generally be eligible to apply for an award.

The only selection criteria are outstanding merit and research potential. Other factors such as finance, nationality, proposed field of study are not taken into account.

If you are eligible, you will automatically be sent application details from the month of December onwards.

The final closing date for completed application forms is 28 February 2007. However, you are advised to submit your forms as soon as possible for them to be checked and references obtained.

Business Plan Competition: How to Write a Business Plan

University of California: Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program

Location: Calit2 Auditorium

The 2007 Stradling Yocca Carlson & Rauth Business Plan Competition in The Paul Merage School of Business is one of the nation's premier business plan competitions. It offers all UCI students, faculty and researchers the opportunity to form a team, create a business plan and generate funding within a four-month span. UROP is co-sponsoring the undergraduate awards. The competition started January 17th and will end with the Final Presentations and Awards Ceremony Friday, May 18th, in the auditorium of Calit2.

DESIGNS on GERMANY -- DAAD Poster Contest

We are seeking artists to create a poster for DAAD North America that will publicize study and research in Germany. The design will not only promote a transatlantic experience but also awareness of the international classroom and Germany as an educational destination, whether it be to study art or biology, complete an engineering internship or conduct scientific research. The poster should convey the quality of the German academic experience, as well as the energy of Germany’s keen culture. This competition is open to artists of all backgrounds including, but not limited to, photography, illustration, painting and graphic design. This is an excellent opportunity for students interested in advertising, design and communication arts.

Who May Enter?

# The competition is open to students of print media, photography, graphic design, drawings, illustration, paintings etc.
# Participants need to be registered as an undergraduate or graduate at a U.S. or Canadian college or university or be a recent graduate in the academic year 2006/2007.
# Only individual submissions will be accepted. No team submissions are permitted.Only one submission per student.

Prizes

1st Prize: Roundtrip airfare and full tuition to Open Space Art Camp in Kassel Germany in conjunction with the documenta 12 exhibition.
OPEN SPACE: Kunsthochschule Kassel presents Open Space, a 12-day workshop/symposium for 40 advanced students from international art academies. The program runs in conjunction with documenta 12 and aims to provoke critical discussion and analysis of documenta 12 through investigating contemporary art practice.

Submission Rules and Guidelines

All submissions must be the sole work of the person submitting it and free of claims and rights of third parties.

1. Each participant may make only one submission. Any double-entries will not be considered.

2. All submissions must include a title.

3. Each submission must make use of the DAAD logo as it already exists. Please see Rule 13 in regard to how to obtain the DAAD logo.

4. Slogans and text are welcome and even encouraged as part of the poster design.

5. All genres are welcome as part of the poster design: print media, photography, graphic design, drawings, illustration, paintings etc.

6. All entrants must include six copies of the completed application form, including bio and statement of purpose. (See #13).

7. It is the responsibility of the participant to ensure that any submitted work that includes photographs or digital images were taken with the verbal permission of the subjects and that those subjects are willing for their image to be used by DAAD.

8. Submissions and all material therein, by virtue of their entrance in the competition, warrant that the entrant grants DAAD the right to use all submission materials for all DAAD purposes.

9. Submissions become the sole property of the DAAD and will not be returned.

10. Entrants will be deemed to have accepted these rules, agreed to them and to be bound by them by entering a submission.

11. Applications must include a brief biography and statement of purpose for the work submitted (1/2 page each). Remember to include six copies of each. The winning candidate must be willing and able to participate in Open Space Art Camp 2007.

12. Acceptable files and layout for submission: the size should be 19.25 x 27.5, set up for 1/8 inch bleed. That means that the artwork is a little larger than the final size, with crop marks showing where the cuts are. The dpi for all images has to be at least 300. Use only Quark, Illustrator, or InDesign and please save the file as a high resolution PDF on CD. Please make sure fonts are embedded.Only one copy is necessary.

13. Include the DAAD logo to be in the poster design/layout. Please visit www.daad.de/presse/de/8.4.3.html for official DAAD logos.

14. Submissions must meet all aforementioned criteria in order to be considered for the 2007 competition. All incomplete submissions, or submissions not meeting one or more of the stated competition criteria will not be considered. Design submissions must be received by 17:00 EST on the last day of the competition, March 23rd, 2007. Please submit all elements together.

15. The selected First Place Winner must contact the DAAD within two weeks of the announcement to coordinate arrangements for Art Camp-documenta 12. It is the responsibility of the winner to secure an appropriate VISA and/or passport for travel to Germany. DAAD will provide the winner with all precise details of the prize including destination, mode of transport, accommodation, passport and visa requirements for the precise date of the journey.

16. The winning candidate must be willing and able to participate in Open Space Art Camp 2007.

17. DAAD assumes no liability for the contest winner while he/she is participating in the Art Camp.

18. The winner shall inform the organizer whether he is able to embark on the journey under the conditions described. If no response is given by the winner at the end of this two week period this shall be deemed a rejection of the travel prize and the runner-up will be contacted.
