PhD Scholarships in ICT, Aalborg University, Denmark

At the Faculties of Engineering, Science and Medicine 5 PhD stipends are available within the general study programmes Wireless Communication and Computer Science. The stipends are open for appointment from September 15, 2010 or as soon as possible thereafter.

5 Mobility Stipends in ICT

The PhD stipends are offered via a grant to three departments at Aalborg University; Department of Electronic Systems, Department of Computer Science, and Department of Mathematical Sciences. The grant from The Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation covers 5 full financed PhD stipends. The driving hypotheses of the projects are the following:

A. Hypothesis: Adaptive signal processing algorithms implemented as embedded software can be used to linearize a highly nonlinear but energy efficient power amplifier core to yield an overall linear and energy efficient amplifier. The applicant needs competences in one or more of the areas: RF electronics and modelling, embedded systems, IC design, FPGA design, power amplifier design, and RF simulation techniques. B. Hypothesis: Bayesian statistical methods based on a unified approach for divergence approximations can be used to improve the performance of data receivers for mobile communications where the challenge is to make a decision on what data was originally sent by a transmitter or a group of transmitters, when the data is corrupted due to interferences, e.g. generated by other transmitters. Desired competences in one or more of the areas: Data receiver design, wireless communication, signal processing, and Bayesian statistics. C. Hypothesis: Quantitative model checking, simulation, static analysis and compiler optimizing methods may be used for designing and implementing optimal mappings and scheduling of embedded applications onto multi-core, multi-processor and networked architectures. Desired competences in one or more of the areas: Computer science, embedded systems, multi-core architectures, and verification and scheduling. D. Hypothesis: Advances in spatial and computational statistics are capable of improving the foundation for understanding and exploiting data-dependent characteristics of spatio-temporal indexing and query processing techniques for the mobile Internet, thus resulting in more effective techniques. Desired competences in one or more of the areas: computer science and statistics – in particular interest in the mobile Internet and spatial and computational statistics. E. Hypothesis: Utilizing simultaneous coverage from multiple wireless access devices and exploiting knowledge about typical spatio-temporal communication patterns obtained through spatio-temporal data mining techniques, it is possible to predict which links can be kept in a low power state at certain times, while still allowing data packets to be routed in the mobile core network, and thereby reducing the overall power consumption very significantly. Desired competences in one or more of the areas: databases, data mining, and/or spatio-temporal data management, combined with an interest in wireless communications. The projects are supported by three departments as mentioned earlier; Dept. of Electronic systems, Dept. of Computer Science, and Dept. of Mathematical Sciences. For all projects two supervisors will be appointed – a main supervisor and a co-supervisor. The two supervisors will always be from different departments. It is the plan to have some joint activities for all 5 PhD students – for example, a summer school is planned.

Requirements:
Since the PhD stipends have been funded by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation with the plan to improve mobility, you are not allowed to have a Masters degree from Aalborg University. As long as your qualifying masters degree has been received from any other university than Aalborg University you can apply – also if you have your degree from another Danish university.

The application:
The applicant must submit an application for each stipend he or she wishes to apply for. The application must include the following:

1. An application letter stating the motivation of the applicant to apply for precisely this stipend, applicants background, other relevant information etc. This letter must also include a list of submitted material.
2. A Curriculum Vitae.
3. Copies of all relevant degrees obtained as well as copies of relevant scientific papers etc. These must be in Danish or English (signed by an authorized translator). Exam papers in other languages can’t be assessed.
4. A maximum 2 page (11 point Calibri / 2 cm margins all sides) proposal for the research to be pursued in the project containing:
a. Suitable title.
b. Brief background for the project.
c. Initiating problem.
d. Short state-of-the-art in the field with use of a few key references.
e. Novel ideas to solve the proposed problem (in the form of bullet points).
f. Main challenges to work on in the project (in the form of bullet points).
g. A rough sketch of a time and work plan.
h. Up to 5 key references.

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Masters degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of the Faculties of Engineering, Science and Medicine, in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 18 of January 14, 2008 on the PhD Programme at the Universities. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed every six months. It is a prerequisite for continuation of salary payment that the previous progress is approved at the time of the evaluation.

The qualifications of the applicant will be assessed by an assessment committee. On the basis of the recommendation of the assessment committee, the Dean of the Faculties of Engineering, Science and Medicine will make a decision for allocating the stipend.

DESIRE – Creative Design for Innovation in Science and Technology

DESIRE aims to make theoretical contributions to the field of creative design by bringing together expertise in human computer interaction, psychology, arts and design. The network aims to advance our understanding of creative design processes applied in the scientific and technological problem solving. This will lead to the elaboration of (i) theories and models of creative processes in general, and those involved in creative problem solving in particular, and (ii) a toolbox of methods, techniques and systems to support both creative design processes and creativity training.

The network places particular emphasis on the research training to be provided to successful candidates. Thus, each researcher will benefit from a rich training program that will take advantage of both local and network wide activities, as well as of conferences and summer schools.

Applications are invited for 13 studentships on creative design, 4 of which at Lancaster University, UK. The positions are funded by the EU for 36 months. The network requires expertise from various disciplines and the specific requirements as well as details about each individual projects can be found at: http://www.comp.lancs.ac.uk/~corina/DESIRE. Aligned with the specific requirements of each project, the applicants should have a good degree in Computer Science, Psychology, Design or Arts. They should also have the ability to work independently and as part of a group, possess good communication skills, and be able to write high quality technical reports. The working language in this project is English. We encourage applications from all interested students, regardless of gender, race, disability, etc. The network aims to appoint women to at least 40% of the positions.

Restrictions: Candidates should have less than 4 years of research experience. Positions are open to candidates of any nationality with the exception that the student may not have resided in the country of the host institution for more than one year in the 3 years before appointment.

Australia: PhD Scholarships for Research in Indonesia on Community, Environment and Local Governance Issues

Expressions of interest are sought for two PhD scholarship positions to carry out field research in Indonesia on community, environment and local governance issues.

The successful candidates will work with a team of experienced researchers - Dr Greg Acciaioli (UWA), A/Prof Anton Lucas and Dr Jim Schiller (Flinders), Dr John McCarthy (ANU), and A/Prof Carol Warren (Murdoch), as well as collaborating researchers in the Netherlands and Indonesia on an Australian Research Council Discovery Project entitled `Social Capital, Natural Resources and Local Governance in Indonesia`. The project will focus on case studies of local decision-making on environmental issues in the context of conservation and development programs in different regions of Indonesia. It aims to improve understanding of contemporary community dynamics in a range of cultural and ecological settings, as well as the practical implications of local participation and capacity building interventions for achieving equity and sustainability outcomes.

The two candidates will be based at Flinders University in Adelaide and Murdoch University in Perth respectively, with location and supervision determined by the focus and site of each student`s component of the project. It is anticipated that one student will work in a coastal community where marine conservation issues are the focus of research, while the second student will focus on a primarily agrarian research site in which World Bank / AusAID / NGO local capacity building, conservation and development projects are being conducted.


Essential criteria include:
* a first-class Honours or Masters degree with a thesis component in a relevant social science field
* advanced fluency in Indonesian language
* field research or other equivalent community/overseas experience
* ability to work independently and as part of a team

USA: Postodoctoral Position in Age-Related Diseases, University of Wisconsin-Madison

The Biology of Aging & Age-Related Diseases Training Grant is an established, multidisciplinary grant funded by NIH that focuses on basic mechanisms of aging, preventive interventions & clinical problems of older adults. France: PhD Positions in Color Content-Aware Image Processing

Subjet: Robust color invariant features for object recognition

Introduction :

Image retrieval consists in finding among a database of target images those which represent the same scene as this represented by a query image. In this context, the key-point is the extraction of efficient descriptors from the images. Several recent studies have shown that color histograms can be very efficient in this context. However, color histograms do not take into account the spatial arrangement of colors and are very sensitive to illumination changes. Several authors have shown that the spatial organization of colors could significantly improve the performance of the image classifiers. Some spatial descriptors, such as color correlograms, may be used to represent in a global way the spatial arrangement of colors in the image, but they are sensitive to object occlusion and scale variation and are not designed to recognize objects in cluttered scenes. In very recent works, few searchers propose to extract local descriptors such as SIFT or SURF which have been proven to be more robust to local features. The SURF outperform the SIFT and are less time consuming. However, the SURF are not yet designed to work on color images.

Objectives:

The aim of this thesis is to extend the SURF to: (a) color information, (b) interest point detection and (c) local description. The interest points detected by the SURF approach result from the analysis of the intensity function discontinuities. However, it has been shown that, in the context of fast object recognition, the human visual system is attracted by regions characterized by high visual saliency and that these visual attention regions are not necessarily regions characterized by intensity function discontinuities. On the other hand, we propose to detect interest points by exploiting the color visual saliency in the images. Previous works done in our lab. will be used in this context.Furthermore, the SURF descriptors are based on specific local intensity gradients. Since color descriptors are more distinctive than gray level ones, we propose to determine new local color descriptors that are invariant to illumination changes. Previous works done in our lab. will be used in this context.

Candidacy:

We seek strong and motivated candidates. Selection will be based on: 1. Excellence of the candidate: outstanding achievement in the applicant’s Master of Science degree level in imaging science, computer science, or any discipline pertaining to the quantitative description of image processing, provided that the applicant can provide evidence of the necessary previous knowledge (i.e. a base of minimal competencies) particularly in the fields of computer science fundamentals, and image analysis and signal processing fundamentals. 2. Language ability: the candidates must demonstrate sound knowledge of the language (the requirement for competence in English is equivalent to TOEFL with at least 213 points (computer based)/550 points (paper based) or IELTS at grade 6.5. Knowledge of French will be not compulsory, but will be beneficial. 3. Student motivation to undertake the PhD and relevance to his/her professional development (explaining the application, the present situation, the interest in the PhD degree, the intentions after this PhD degree, …).

Australia: PhD Scholarships - Murdoch University

This project will use mass spectrometry based instrumental techniques GC-MS, LC-MS and GC-ICP-MS. The project will develop sample preparation technology and instrumental methods capable of pushing pesticide and herbicide residue detection limits to levels necessary for Australia to protect its food export markets over the next 5-15 years. By analogy, the project will improve the current required detection levels (0.01 ppm or 10ppb), equivalent to detecting a teaspoon of residue in a family swimming pool; to the projected future detection levels, equivalent to detecting a drop of residue in an Olympic swimming pool.

Postgraduate Scholarships - University of Leeds

Bibliography Scholarships is currently offered by the Institute of Medieval Studies (IMS) for international postgraduate students who are beginning either the MA programme or the PhD in the Institute. The scholarship is worth £1500 (paid in instalments over the academic year).

The successful candidates will work in the team producing the International Medieval Bibliography. They will receive training in the principles and practice of bibliographical abstracting and indexing in the different disciplines relevant to Medieval Studies, with particular emphasis on historical geography, manuscript referencing and different linguistic equivalents of index terms.

They will undertake practical work experience in the production of an electronic serial bibliography under the supervision of the Editor of the International Medieval Bibliography, and will be required to compile complete bibliographical records in appropriate areas of expertise. The work will be undertaken for half a day per week over the academic year; there will be some flexibility in working times to accommodate vacations and/or research trips.

Candidates Qualifications

* A wide range of knowledge of the European Middle Ages (c. 400-1500)

The Netherlands: PhD Scholarship on Biocatalysis, University of Groningen

Four-year PhD scholarship on biocatalysis

Project description
It concerns a 4-year research project aimed at the exploration of proline-based biocatalysts for catalyzing non-natural carbonyl transformation reactions. The work involves the extensive screening for aldolase, alkylation, decarboxylation, and Michael addition activities in several well-known tautomerases. The target activities or products will be identified by UV and fluorescence spectroscopy (e.g., in an 96/384-well format), HPLC, LC-MS, GC-MS and NMR. Of the best enzymes, a detailed mechanistic characterization will be carried out, using kinetic and pH studies as well as site-directed mutagenesis. In collaboration with other members of the research group, the most promising enzymes that show the desired activity will be used in engineering experiments to enhance or extent the activity to a practical level.

Offered scholarship
We offer a PhD grant of about €1580,- per month during 4 years. The research should lead at the end of the 4-years period to a PhD in Natural Sciences. See also this link.

Organization
The research will be conducted in the Pharmaceutical Biotechnology group of Dr. G.J. Poelarends, which is embedded in the Department of Pharmaceutical Biology headed by Prof. Dr. W.J. Quax (www.farmbio.nl). The department participates in the Groningen Research Institute of Pharmacy (GRIP) and the interfaculty Graduate School for Drug Exploration (GUIDE). The living cell as a factory for pharmaceutically relevant compounds is the central theme of the Department of Pharmaceutical Biology. A full-time MPhil/PhD funded studentship is available in the Lancashire Business School. The studentship is tenable up to 3 years (subject to satisfactory progress) with an expected commencement date of 1 July 2008. This project critically appraises the nature and extent of the entrepreneurial skills, activities and needs of farmers as providers of rural tourism products and experiences, locating the analysis within contemporary rural development and diversification policies. Its purpose is to develop a model of successful entrepreneurship skills and strategies for farm diversification into tourism as a basis for developing appropriate rural development and diversification policies.

Germany: PhD Position for e-NMR in Frankfurt am Main

Job description

You will be part of a European team working toward the deployment and unification of the NMR computational infrastructure in system biology, e-NMR, a project funded under the 7th framework programme of the European Union.

Biomolecular NMR plays an important role in life sciences, and structural biology in particular, at both European and international levels. The main objective of this project is to optimize and extend the use of the NMR Research Infrastructures of EU-NMR through the implementation of an e-Infrastructure in order to provide the European biomolecular NMR user community with a platform integrating and streamlining the computational approaches necessary for NMR data analysis.

For this, you will work on the development of a uniformed and integrated e-NMR platform that will form the core of the e-NMR infrastructure. The work will be carried in close collaboration with our European partners.

Qualifications

PhD Student in Applied Environmental Science

focus on Ozone depleting gases - Isotopic Source Apportionment

Methyl chloride and methyl bromide are both significantly affecting atmospheric chemistry including thinning of the stratospheric ozone layer. There exists a large uncertainty regarding the relative importance of their different natural (e.g., marine and land-based) and anthropogenic sources. This Ph.D. thesis project would seek to develop and apply unique measurements of the isotopic composition of these methyl halides (e.g., C, Br, and Cl isotope systems) to make progress toward improved understanding of the sources that are required for projections of future ozone layer thickness. This position offers the possibility to acquire a broad range of analytical and conceptual skills within environmental analytical chemistry, biogeochemistry and climate science. The Ph.D. student would join an internationally active group of researchers and have full access to state-of-the-art field sampling and analytical facilities at Stockholm University and the Swedish Museum of Natural History (Laboratory for Isotope Geology). Field campaigns are planned to the Swedish west coast, sub-arctic Abisko region and on northern Svalbard in the high Arctic. This project is primarily financed by the Swedish Research Council (VR).

Qualifications

We are seeking a highly motivated student with a completed university degree in one science and a genuine interest in interdisciplinary environmental/climate research. Your background is likely in chemistry, engineering or earth and environmental sciences. Experience in instrumental analysis would be an asset but is not a requirement.

The post-graduate student will work in a research group in stochastic processes and numeric analysis of random functions, with applications to signal and image processing and to simulation techniques. Current research areas also include financial mathematics, stochastic modeling for databases, and data mining. The mathematics which the group focuses on is stochastic processes, inference for random functions, and approximation theory. Programming in, for example, Splus and Matlab, will be a natural part of the PhD program.

UK: PhD Studentship at University of London

PhD Studentship - Comorbid and persistent psychological distress in adolescence: a longitudinal study of preventive and risk mar Barts and the London School of Medicine & Dentistry Queen Mary, University of London

We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic graduate with a strong interest in adolescent mental health research and quantitative methodology to undertake secondary analyses of the longitudinal RELACHS (Research with East London Adolescents: Community Health Survey) cohort data (www.relachs.org.uk). A graduate with at least an upper second class BSc (Hons) in psychology/sociology/epidemiology/or related social science or a lower second class BSc (Hons) with a relevant MSc is required for this project. The successful candidate will seek to establish a research career in epidemiology, psychology or social science.

The project will involve a literature review, as well as statistical analyses examining the role of preventive and risk markers at the individual, school, family, and neighbourhood level for comorbid and persistent psychological distress in early- to mid-adolescence. Analyses will examine patterns of psychological distress in early- and mid-adolescence; investigate factors which influence the persistence and non-persistence of psychological ill-health, as well as preventive and risk markers for comorbid psychological ill-health; and explore the effects of comorbid and persistent psychological distress in early adolescence on health and social outcomes in mid-adolescence. The successful candidate will be organised and systematic in their management and analyses of the dataset and show initiative in developing their analysis plans. The ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing in English is essential.

The student will be based in the Centre for Psychiatry, Wolfson Institute of Preventive Medicine at the School’s Charterhouse Square Campus.

PhD Studentships Boehringer Ingelheim Fund

Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds invites applications for its PhD scholarships for basic research aimed at acquiring new scientific knowledge. The foundation supports projects aimed to elucidate basic phenomena of human life. Applicants should not be older than 27 years of age. Natural scientists may apply after having submitted a diploma or equivalent thesis; physicians, veterinary surgeons and pharmacists should have passed state examinations. At the deadline the applicant should not have worked on their project for longer than six months. Nationality is irrelevant. European citizens are supported in Europe or overseas; non-European citizens receive support when working in Europe. Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds will award approximately 15 PhD scholarships per funding round. Each scholarship is granted for at least two years, with an option of renewal for a further 12 months. Irrespective of the scholar’s age the basic monthly grant amounts to 1,400 euros. In Switzerland, in the US and the UK 500 euros are added as a compensation for purchasing power.

Application for a PhD Scholarship
The application for a PhD scholarship of the Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds consists of two parts:
