Special Graduate Program on Engineering for Systems Innovation - The University of Tokyo

Graduate School of Engineering (Three Departments), The University of Tokyo, offer advanced study and research opportunities to foreign students in the framework of the Special Graduate Program on Engineering for Systems Innovation (“the Special Program”).

The program offers:
• Master’s (2 years)
• Doctoral (3 years)
courses leading to the degrees of Master of Engineering and Doctor of Engineering degrees in the Three Departments, respectively.

Those accepted to Special Graduate Program on Engineering for Systems Innovation will be enrolled in the winter semester which begins on October 1, 2008. Research and instruction are conducted both in English and in Japanese. Japanese language courses are offered by the Department of Systems Innovation.

The students for Special Graduate Program on Engineering for Systems Innovation will be selected primarily based on academic qualification. To be eligible for admission to the Master’s program an applicant must hold Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. For admission to the doctoral program an applicant must hold a Master’s Degree or its equivalent. The age of the applicant must be under 35 on April 1, 2008 and must be citizens of countries with whom the Japanese government has diplomatic relations.

How To Apply
The following documents (originals and/or several copies as indicated) must reach the Foreign Student Office of the Department of Quantum Engineering and Systems Science by January 4, 2008. In case you want to submit the application urgently to meet the due date please send at first the documents in PDF files by email, then submit the original ones through ordinary mail.

The necessary materials to be submitted:
• One original and five copies of Application for Japanese Government (Monbukagakusyo) Scholarship (Form #1).
• One original and five copies of Field of Study and Study Program (Form #2).
• One original and five copies of Application for Japanese Government (Monbukagakusyo) Scholarship (Annex) (Form #3).
• One original and five copies of Certificate of Health completed by a registered medical doctor. Copy of the latest periodic medical check-up record of your institute is acceptable.
• One original and six copies of Application Card (Form #4).
• One original and five copies of Self-evaluation Form (Form #5).
• Mailing address labels (Form #6).
• One original and five A4-sized copies of Certificate of Graduation and Diploma of Degree for each study period (Bachelor, Master, Doctor), with English translation if the original one is not in English.
• One original and five A4-sized copies of Official Transcript or Academic Record of undergraduate and graduate study from each institution which the applicant graduated from or is presently enrolled in, with English translation if the original one is not in English.
• Two evaluation reports (Confidential Evaluation Report on Applicant). One evaluator must be a dean or a person in higher position in the institution, the other should be a faculty member of the institution which the applicant is presently attending or attended most recently, who knows the applicant well such as an academic advisor. The evaluation is expected to rank the applicant according to his/her grade within certain education unit, for example, “top 5% among 98 students of the department, top 3 among 350 students” (see Sample). The report should be signed, sealed then sent directly to the Foreign Students Office of the Department of Quantum Engineering and Systems Science.
• A recommendation Letter from dean or a person in higher position of the institution. The letter should address to the President of The University of Tokyo and be directly sent to the Foreign Students Office of the Department of Quantum Engineering and Systems Science. Recommender’s E. mail address and telephone number must be indicated.
• Six copies of census register, passport or other proof of citizenship (do not need to send the original passport).
• Six passport-size photographs (6cm x 4cm) taken within past six months.
• A summery of thesis, research papers and other publications authored by applicant.
• Score of TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or official certificate of your English capability. This does not apply to the native English speakers.
• Score of GRE (Graduate Record Examination), if available.

2008-2009 Graduate Scholarship Application
Master's Degree, Educational Specialist Degree, and Post-Baccalaureate Certification Students
(Not School of Social Work Students, Speech-Language Pathology Students, and
Physician Assistant Students)
All material must be submitted by February 14, 2008.

Awards will be made on the basis of three factors: academic promise, normally represented by a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.00 or a graduate GPA of 3.50; professional focus and commitment; and financial need (required for specific scholarships).

File a complete admissions application. It is fully expected that each prospective student who is a scholarship applicant will have a complete admissions application on file with the Office of Graduate Admissions by February 14, 2008. The admissions application provides the supporting documentation necessary to evaluate a scholarship application.

Complete the scholarship application electronically. The scholarship application itself is on a secure server. You must press "yes" if your browser asks you if you wish to display secure items, otherwise Marywood University will not receive any of the information you type on the application upon submission.

If you declare full-time status on the scholarship application, enrollment in nine or more credits in the Fall 2008 and Spring 2009 semesters or what your graduate department defines as full enrollment in structured programs, and are awarded a full-time status scholarship and enroll for less than full-time registration in either of these semesters your scholarship award will be reduced.

If you declare part-time status on your scholarship application, The Committee on Graduate Scholarships expects part-time status students who are scholarship recipients to enroll in and maintain at least six credits in the fall semester and at least six credits in the spring semester. Part-time status scholarship recipients who fail to meet this requirement in a semester will have their scholarships rescinded for that semester.

Email a scholarship essay as a Microsoft Word document. Please type an essay (300-500 words) clarifying the relationship between your life-goals and graduate education at Marywood. Your essay will also be judged on depth of expression and use of the English language. Your essay must clearly address the following areas:

1. Describe your professional work background and experience.

2. Describe your community leadership activities. Indicate if a volunteer activity.

3. Describe any commendations and appreciation awards as well as undergraduate and graduate academic awards and honors.

4. Describe any special projects, demonstrations, workshops, recitals, exhibits, or whatever may be appropriate to your area to indicate your abilities and interests.

5. What are your short and long range career goals and objectives?

6. What attracted you to your Marywood program as a vehicle for achieving your goals?

Scholarship selection results will be mailed in early April 2008. Scholarships are available for use beginning Fall 2008; they may only be used to defray tuition for Marywood courses.

Students awarded graduate assistantships for the 2008-2009 academic year who accept those positions are not eligible to receive scholarship awards as well.

Marywood University undergraduate students who are enrolled in formal five-year programs are automatically eligible for at least forty percent of their undergraduate merit award or higher for their fifth year of study at the graduate level provided they are admitted to the master's level by their academic department.

Neither scholarship nor assistantship awards are renewed automatically each year. It is the responsibility of the student to reapply each academic year.

Datatel Scholars Foundation Scholarship for Undergraduate and Graduate Students

Eligibility
For outstanding students currently attending an eligible Datatel client institution. The Datatel Scholars Foundation scholarship is open to fulltime and parttime students (taking at least six credit hours), as well as undergraduate and graduate students.

Personal Statement Essay
The Datatel Scholars Foundation scholarship personal statement essay should summarize educational goals and objectives, where the applicant has been as an individual, and where they hope their education will take them. They should also indicate the difference a Datatel scholarship would make in their life and to those around them.

Award Amount
The applications for the Datatel Scholars Foundation scholarship are divided into three groups based on the undergraduate tuition at the college or university the applicant attends. Each group receives scholarships and the Datatel Scholars Foundation Board of Directors determines the number of scholarships each year. Award amounts for each group are as follows:

* Group A - $2,400
* Group B - $1,600
* Group C - $1,000

Winners Profile
For the 2007-2008 academic year awards, 38% of the students who were nominated by their institution won an award. The Foundation awarded 270 Datatel Scholars Foundation scholarships totaling $450,000.

Graduate Fellowship

A masters degree in international affairs or a related field is almost a prerequisite to leadership in the international arena. Accordingly, Fellows apply to and enroll in the Nation’s leading graduate programs, most members of the Association of Professional Schools of International Affairs (APSIA).

To date, IIPP Fellows have enrolled at the following institutions: American University, Columbia University, Georgetown University, George Washington University, Harvard University, Johns Hopkins University, Princeton University, Syracuse University, Tufts University, University of Denver, University of Maryland, University of Michigan, University of Washington, and Yale University. Non-APSIA schools include Cornell University, Pepperdine University, New York University, and the Bush School at Texas A&M.

Participating graduate schools provide support of at least $15,000 over the course of a two-year program. IIPP, in turn, provides each of its Fellows with a matching grant of $15,000 to be applied in accordance with an agreement between IIPP and the institution the Fellow attends.[source]
