UK: PhD Studentship at Institute of Cellular Medicine
PhD Studentship - Xenobiotic Exposure as a Trigger for Primary Biliary Cirrhosis, Institute of Cellular Medicine
* Institute: Institute of Cellular Medicine and the Medical Toxicology Unit
* Sponsor: The British Toxicology Society
* Supervisor(s): Dr Matthew C Wright, Professor Peter G Blain and Professor Faith M Williams
* Duration: 3 years from 1 October 2008
Project description
Primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) is a liver disease of unknown aetiology characterised by the destruction of the intra-hepatic bile ducts, cholestasis, liver cirrhosis and death. The only treatment at present is liver transplantation. PBC is often thought to be an auto-immune disease. However, the auto-antigens exist in all cells of the body, yet inflammation is restricted to the bile ducts.
The aims of this project are to screen a range of xenobiotics for their oestrogenic activity in hepatocytes and for their ability to modulate mitochondrial polarisation in hepatocytes and bile duct epithelial cells. Bile duct inflammation will then be examined in an animal model of PBC using selected xenobiotics shown to have both oestrogenic and mitochondrial effects.

UK: PhD Studentships in Computational Models of Visual Processing, University of Edinburgh
PhD Studentship - Computational Models of Visual Processing, Institute of Communicating and Collaborative Systems
The Institute of Communicating and Collaborative Systems (ICCS) within the School of Informatics and the Human Communication Research Centre (HCRC) invites applications for a three-year PhD studentship funded by the European Research Council, starting in September 2008.
The successful applicant will work on a project that investigates the synchronous processing of linguistic and visual information. The project studies key features of synchronous processing by tracking participants’ eye movements when they view a naturalistic scene and listen to a speech stimulus at the same time. The experimental results will feed into a series of computational models that predict the eye-movement patterns that humans exhibit when they view a scene and listen to speech at the same time. These models will incrementally construct aligned linguistic and visual representations, and will be evaluated against eye-tracking data.
The PhD student will be part of a team of experts in linguistic and visual processing, including both experimentalists and computational modellers. The student will contribute to the modelling component of the project, and should have previous experience in image processing,
computer vision, or computational models of perception and attention. Applicants should have a good honours degree or equivalent in cognitive
science, artificial intelligence, computer science, or a related discipline. Good programming skills, preferably in Matlab, Java, C, or C++, are required. Familiarity with probabilistic modelling and machine learning is essential.
The studentship will provide maintenance only funding at an enhanced UK research council rate.
Informal enquiries regarding this studentship can be made to Dr Frank Keller (keller[ at ]inf.ed.ac.uk). Further details about the project can
also be found at: http://www.inf.ed.ac.uk/events/news/kellerercgrant.html
Applications are welcome from UK, EU and overseas candidates. To apply please submit an application form and the required application papers, including a statement of research interests (which should include details regarding the particular research direction you would be interested in within the remit of this studentship). Application forms and details on how to apply are available from our website at http://www.inf.ed.ac.uk/postgraduate/apply.html (at question 21 on the application form, please indicate “ICCS ERC Studentship”).
Application deadline: 31 March 2008.
Applications after that date may be considered if the studentship has not been allocated.

Harvard Summer School Program 2008-2009
In association with the Harvard University Summer School, the Center for Tropical Forest Science and the Arnold Arboretum (CTFS-AA) will offer a field biology course to be held in Sarawak and Sabah (East Malaysia) from 1 July to 5 August 2008. Ten Southeast and South Asian participants will join 10 US students to study terrestrial and marine biodiversity, ecology and conservation, with instructors from Harvard University and other institutions.
The forests and reefs of northwest and north Borneo have some of the highest levels of alpha diversity in the world. The forests are home to orang-utans, hornbills, rhinos and thousands of tree species, and the reefs offer some of the best diving in the world. We will visit world-class parks and reserves (e.g., Lambir, Kinabalu and the Maliau Basin), to gain a thorough understanding of abiotic controls on species composition, and will contrast processes that maintain biodiversity in forests with those operating on coral reefs. Throughout Borneo, intensive logging and marine harvesting have occurred for many years. Our course will explore the complexities of conservation today, including trips to sustainably-managed, carbon-traded, and restored forests. We will also provide opportunities for the students to meet people living in and off the forest, to understand their motivations for forest conversion and conservation, and to consider the human health dimensions of forest change.
A key feature will be the development of skills in research project design, execution and analysis, based around the statistical platform `R.’ The students will complete two independent projects, from conception to presentation, and participate in a group project on the coral reef. The students will gain database and web publishing skills by developing a community digital record of the trip.
The course is aimed at advanced undergraduates, recent graduates currently active in biological research, and postgraduate entry-level students. Travel, food, accommodation and course fees will be funded for Tropical Asian nationals (ASEAN, PNG, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, China) by the CTFS-AA program. Students will be responsible for other costs and some students may be requested to pay their international travel. Places may be available for non-Harvard, non-Asian, paying students. Students will be selected to provide broad international representation.
For more information on the course (including instructions for application) see:

A flyer is available for posting on notice boards:

PhD Research Studentship in Engineering - University of Cambridge
PhD Research Studentship
Interacting Turbulent Flames Using Dns And Laser Diagnostics
Department of Engineering
A Research Studentship position is available on an EPSRC funded research project in the study of interacting turbulent flames using DNS and laser diagnostics. This project involves collaboration with Rolls-Royce Plc. and Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery Ltd. in the UK. The main aim of the project is to develop close understanding of interacting turbulent premixed flames using Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) methodology and laser diagnostics. The interacting flames are one of the fundamental root cause for "noisy" combustion, but this is still a terra incognita for modelling. The research student will be involved in the experimental part of the project but there will be constant interaction between the experimental and computational parts. The Ph.D student will work closely with one of investigators and will be using state of the art multi-scalar imaging and particle image velocimetry (PIV) facilities available in the Engineering Department.
The successful candidate will have a first class degree in Mechanical/Aerospace/Chemical engineering. Applications from overseas students will also be considered. Funding, covering all fees and maintenance will be available for the three years. The studentship will commence from 1st October 2008.
Further details on the project may be obtained from Dr E. Mastorakos or Dr N. Swaminathan. An application form may be downloaded from the Board of Graduate Studies (BGS) office. More information on the graduate studies at the Engineering Department is available http://www.eng.cam.ac.uk/ If you submit your application on-line via BGS website, send a copy in PDF format to Mrs. Kate Graham so as to reach her not later than 10th May 2008.
Quote Reference: NA03047, Closing Date: 10 May 2008
Interview Date(s): Interviews will take place as soon as suitable candidates are identified.
