DAAD Visiting Professorships (previously Guest Lectureships)

Please note that this is a program FOR GERMAN UNIVERSITITES to host an international lecturer.

This program serves to strengthen the internationalization of the educational experience for scholars, host institutions and students by welcoming educators from abroad to university campuses in Germany for guest teaching assignments. The recent development of international degree programs and traditional curricula looking to infuse an international aspect provide opportunities for professors from other countries to contribute their expertise in particular subjects and teaching methods. Courses need not be taught in German.

Terms of Award

As the applicant, the German host institution receives the DAAD funding. Visiting Professors are paid by the host institution according to the salary schemes for German university faculty. Funding is available for a period of one semester to two years. Additional allowances can be made for travel, luggage and health insurance.

Highly qualified scholars in all academic disciplines, preferably those who hold a doctoral or other terminal degree and have an affiliation with an institution of higher education, are eligible.

Candidates must secure an invitation from a German host institution and teach courses integrated into the regular curriculum.

DESIGNS on GERMANY -- DAAD Poster Contest

We are seeking artists to create a poster for DAAD North America that will publicize study and research in Germany. The design will not only promote a transatlantic experience but also awareness of the international classroom and Germany as an educational destination, whether it be to study art or biology, complete an engineering internship or conduct scientific research. The poster should convey the quality of the German academic experience, as well as the energy of Germany’s keen culture. This competition is open to artists of all backgrounds including, but not limited to, photography, illustration, painting and graphic design. This is an excellent opportunity for students interested in advertising, design and communication arts.

Who May Enter?

# The competition is open to students of print media, photography, graphic design, drawings, illustration, paintings etc.
# Participants need to be registered as an undergraduate or graduate at a U.S. or Canadian college or university or be a recent graduate in the academic year 2006/2007.
# Only individual submissions will be accepted. No team submissions are permitted.Only one submission per student.

Prizes

1st Prize: Roundtrip airfare and full tuition to Open Space Art Camp in Kassel Germany in conjunction with the documenta 12 exhibition.
OPEN SPACE: Kunsthochschule Kassel presents Open Space, a 12-day workshop/symposium for 40 advanced students from international art academies. The program runs in conjunction with documenta 12 and aims to provoke critical discussion and analysis of documenta 12 through investigating contemporary art practice.

Submission Rules and Guidelines

All submissions must be the sole work of the person submitting it and free of claims and rights of third parties.

1. Each participant may make only one submission. Any double-entries will not be considered.

2. All submissions must include a title.

3. Each submission must make use of the DAAD logo as it already exists. Please see Rule 13 in regard to how to obtain the DAAD logo.

4. Slogans and text are welcome and even encouraged as part of the poster design.

5. All genres are welcome as part of the poster design: print media, photography, graphic design, drawings, illustration, paintings etc.

6. All entrants must include six copies of the completed application form, including bio and statement of purpose. (See #13).

7. It is the responsibility of the participant to ensure that any submitted work that includes photographs or digital images were taken with the verbal permission of the subjects and that those subjects are willing for their image to be used by DAAD.

8. Submissions and all material therein, by virtue of their entrance in the competition, warrant that the entrant grants DAAD the right to use all submission materials for all DAAD purposes.

9. Submissions become the sole property of the DAAD and will not be returned.

10. Entrants will be deemed to have accepted these rules, agreed to them and to be bound by them by entering a submission.

11. Applications must include a brief biography and statement of purpose for the work submitted (1/2 page each). Remember to include six copies of each. The winning candidate must be willing and able to participate in Open Space Art Camp 2007.

12. Acceptable files and layout for submission: the size should be 19.25 x 27.5, set up for 1/8 inch bleed. That means that the artwork is a little larger than the final size, with crop marks showing where the cuts are. The dpi for all images has to be at least 300. Use only Quark, Illustrator, or InDesign and please save the file as a high resolution PDF on CD. Please make sure fonts are embedded.Only one copy is necessary.

13. Include the DAAD logo to be in the poster design/layout. Please visit www.daad.de/presse/de/8.4.3.html for official DAAD logos.

14. Submissions must meet all aforementioned criteria in order to be considered for the 2007 competition. All incomplete submissions, or submissions not meeting one or more of the stated competition criteria will not be considered. Design submissions must be received by 17:00 EST on the last day of the competition, March 23rd, 2007. Please submit all elements together.

15. The selected First Place Winner must contact the DAAD within two weeks of the announcement to coordinate arrangements for Art Camp-documenta 12. It is the responsibility of the winner to secure an appropriate VISA and/or passport for travel to Germany. DAAD will provide the winner with all precise details of the prize including destination, mode of transport, accommodation, passport and visa requirements for the precise date of the journey.

16. The winning candidate must be willing and able to participate in Open Space Art Camp 2007.

17. DAAD assumes no liability for the contest winner while he/she is participating in the Art Camp.

18. The winner shall inform the organizer whether he is able to embark on the journey under the conditions described. If no response is given by the winner at the end of this two week period this shall be deemed a rejection of the travel prize and the runner-up will be contacted.

DAAD PhD and Postdoc Scholarship: Research Grant

Research grants are awarded primarily to highly qualified PhD candidates and post-doc researchers for research or a course of study and training at universities or other institutes in Germany.

Eligibility Requirements

* Applicants in all academic fields are welcome to apply. For research in the fields of dentistry, medicine, pharmacy, or veterinary medicine, contact DAAD for special guidelines.
* Graduate students should be enrolled full-time in an accredited graduate program. PhD candidates should have a minimum of ABD status (All but Dissertation). Doctoral and Post-doctoral applicants may also apply.
* Applicants should be US or Canadian citizens. Foreign nationals must be affiliated with an accredited US or Canadian university and express intent to return to their US/Canadian institution following the research visit to Germany. All foreign nationals must contact DAAD New York before applying to determine their eligibility status.
* Applicants are requested to have a well-defined study or research project that makes a stay in Germany essential. Preference will be given to applicants who have been invited by a faculty member at a German university to study or do research in a particular university department.
* Applicants in the arts, humanities and social sciences should have a good command of German.
* Applicants may not hold a DAAD grant and a grant from another German or German-American organization/German-Canadian organization concurrently for the same project. Prior recipients of a DAAD grant should contact DAAD New York before applying to determine their eligibility status.


Terms of Award
* Graduate research scholarships are granted from one to 10 months, with the possibility of a one-year extension. Doctoral candidates wishing to complete their degree in Germany may receive up to three one-year extensions.

* 10-month scholarships must take place during the German academic year (October 1, 2008 to July 31, 2009). Short-term scholarships (one to six months) must take place between January 1, 2008 - December 31, 2008. A very limited number of scholarship holders who receive grants for seven months or longer may be awarded a two-month language course grant.

* Monthly stipends range from approximately €715 to €975, depending on the level of academic advancement. In addition, DAAD will pay for health insurance and and provide a flat rate subsidy for travel costs.

# The application form must be completed online and you must send the original printout of the application with your signature, your supplemental documents and materials, and 5 copies in one package to the DAAD New York office. Incomplete or late applications will not be accepted.

# INSTRUCTIONS FOR EACH PART OF THE APPLICATION:

1) Application Form - The application form for this program is electronic and found online here/ Please answer all questions on the form completely. Do not fill in any blanks with the phrase "see attached," even if you must refer to additional material. Do not forget to sign your application.
2) Curriculum vitae or résumé - in chronological/tabular form. Narrative/paragraph-form CVs are not acceptable. Your name should appear on each page.

3) Research Proposal - A precise description of your research plans. The proposal (excluding references) should be not more than five to six pages in length, double spaced. You should include the current status of research being done around the world on your topic (including a footnote/reference section) and a description of why your project is different and important. You should mention the progress of your research thus far in your academic career. You should pay careful attention to theoretical and methodological planning and you should make it very clear exactly what you propose to do in Germany, as well as an explanation of why a stay in Germany is absolutely essential to your project. Your name should appear on each page.

4) Letter of Recommendation - Submit two original letters of recommendation printed on university letterhead, from professors at North American institutions in your field of study. Referees have the option of using the recommendation form available at www.daad.de/deutschland/download/03118.en.html (referred to as “Reports on scholarship applications”) though it is not mandatory. The form gives a general outline of the points that selection committees expect to find in a recommendation. Recommendations must include an original signature, and enclosed in a sealed envelope. You should submit these with your application package; if your referee prefers not to give them to you or you do not receive them by the deadline date, you may have them sent to the DAAD New York office directly. In some circumstances we would accept faxed letters.

5) Evidence of Contact with a German Institution - Your application will be greatly advantaged if you can provide evidence of any existing contact, or attempt at establishing contact, with academics at your chosen German host institution. It is not necessary to translate the letters of invitation from German faculty. Unfortunately, e-mail cannot be accepted as an official letter of invitation, but may be submitted for reference.

6) DAAD language evaluation form ("Sprachzeugnis") (click here to download - This document should be signed by a faculty member of the German Department at your institution. Even if your German skills are very limited, be sure to submit this certificate. We cannot accept Fulbright forms nor can we accept evaluations from teaching assistants.

7) Transcripts - Submit official transcripts of all post-secondary studies, including explanations of the grading systems. You may submit one official copy and five photocopies of each transcript.

Please keep a photocopy of the completed application and this Information Sheet for your records.

No reasons for decisions will be given.

Application forms and all supporting material remain with DAAD. Upon request, DAAD will return slides, tapes and drawings to applicants in the fine arts and music. Personal data of applicants and grantees will be stored electronically in DAAD’s computer files only to the extent necessary for the administration of the applications and scholarships in accordance with the German Federal Data Protection Act. Data will be provided to the respective International Student Office (Akademisches Auslandsamt) for successful applicants when necessary to administer the scholarship and provide the scholarship holder with guidance services. Applications of unsuccessful candidates will be destroyed after one year.

DAAD-AICGS Research Fellowship Program

The American Institute for Contemporary German Studies (AICGS), the leading resource and research center for analysis and assessment of the German-American relationship in an evolving Europe and changing world, is pleased to announce the DAAD/AICGS Research Fellowship Program. The program is designed to bring scholars and specialists working on Germany, Europe, and/or transatlantic relations to the AICGS, which is located in Washington, DC, for stays of two months each.

Requirements
Project proposals should be compatible with the Institute's mission and address one or more of the Institute's five research and programming areas:

* Germany and the United States in the Global Economy
* Germany in Europe
* New Security Challenges and Changing Foreign Policy Agendas
* Culture, Values, and Politics
* Transnational Issues

Special consideration will be given to research projects relevant to the Institute's current emphases within these areas (please see the AICGS website for current project information).

Applicants must be of German or US nationality.

If selected as DAAD/AICGS fellows, German nationals must be eligible for and obtain a J-1 visa from a US consulate or embassy in Germany.

Terms of Award
Fellowships include a monthly stipend of up to $4,600, depending on the seniority of the applicant, economy class round trip airfare to and from Washington (for a maximum of $770), and office space at the Institute.

All DAAD/AICGS Research Fellows will be expected to produce a short analytical essay for publication on the Institute's website; for fellows producing research of exceptional quality, AICGS will provide opportunities for presentations to a Washington policy audience.
