National Federation of The Blind 2008 Scholarship Program

Each year at its national convention in July, the NFB gives a broad array of thirty scholarships to recognize achievement by blind scholars. All applicants for these scholarships:

1. must be legally blind, and
2. must be pursuing or planning to pursue a full-time, postsecondary course of study in a degree program at a United States' institution in the 2008 scholastic year, except that one scholarship may be given to a person employed full-time while attending school part-time, and
3. must participate in the entire NFB national convention and in all scheduled scholarship program activities.

In addition to a scholarship, each winner will be brought to the 2008 National Federation of the Blind Annual Convention in July at Federation expense, providing an excellent opportunity for high level networking with active blind persons in many, many different professions and occupations.

The scholarship application deadline is March 31, 2008, 5:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time.

Famous Writer Creates Marshall Scholarship

A famous writer with West Virginia ties is creating a scholarship at Marshall University.

The Homer Hickam Red Helmet Scholarship will help the children and grandchildren of coal miners attend college. It can also be used for the children and grandchildren of mine rescue team members.

The scholarship is named for Hickman’s father and for his latest novel, "Red Helmet."

2008 Bob Elliot Journalism Scholarship

This scholarship awards $1500 to one graduating high school senior within the WMTW-TV 8 viewing area who plans to major in journalism, communications or a related area of study. This scholarship is a one-time-only grant.

Bob Elliot will be remembered as one of Maine’s great storytellers. But he also enjoyed working with students, encouraging them to explore their imaginations and the world around them.

It is WMTW-TV 8’s hope that through this scholarship, we can identify promising, young journalists and help them develop their talent.

WMTW-TV 8 is currently seeking applicants for the 2007 Bob Elliott Journalism Scholarship.

Memorial Journalism Scholarship

The public is very dependent on news that is gathered and presented every day. Good journalism requires talent, dedication and a genuine interest in seeing the total picture and understanding what is most important. Diversity among journalists, especially in a region like the San Francisco Bay Area, plays a crucial role ensuring comprehensive and balanced presentation of the news. Filipinos have been underrepresented in journalism, so the publisher and editor of Filipinas Magazine, Mona Lisa Yuchengco, created this scholarship to support students of Filipino heritage who choose to pursue a career in journalism.

General Information

The Maria Elena Yuchengco Memorial Journalism Scholarship will award two to three scholarships totaling $5,000 each year.

This scholarship was created through the Asian Pacific Fund to provide educational opportunities for Filipino American students to pursue journalism as a major or a career.

Criteria

* Full-time undergraduate student at any U.S. college university in fall 2008
* Journalism major or demonstrates a strong commitment to pursue a journalism career
* Filipino heritage (at least 50 percent)
* Cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
* Award based on merit and financial need
* Resident of Northern California
* U.S. citizen or permanent resident

Note: Applicants must be available for an in-person interview in the Bay Area in April 2008.

The AICES doctoral program Aachen-Germany

Admission
The AICES doctoral program is open to a limited number of extremely well-qualified students with a substantial background in their proposed field of study.

Bachelor degree holders applying for the course-based first year of the program should file their application by December for admission in Summer Semester, April for admission in Winter semester.

Applications from Master or Diplom degree holders applying for the research stage of the program are accepted continuously.

All selected applicants will receive a tuition benefit and a stipend of 500 Euro per month during the coursework phase, and a stipend of 2000 Euro per month during the research phase.

Requirements
The requirements for admission are:

• a recent Bachelor, Master or Diplom degree in CES, engineering, geoscience, mathematics or computer science,
• evidence of English-language skills, and,
• a high quality of scholarship evident from transcripts and other application materials.
